Delaware will receive an additional $25 million from “forever chemical”
manufacturers Chemours, DuPont and Corteva.
In 2021, the companies agreed to pay $50 million to the state of Delaware
as a part of a settlement agreement related to the release of harmful per-
and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), otherwise known as forever
chemicals.
A contingency of this settlement was that if the companies were to settle
with any other state for more than $50 million, they would need to fund an
additional $25 million to Delaware.
On Wednesday, the companies announced a $110 million settlement with the
state of Ohio as a result of the companies’ releases of the harmful
chemicals, prompting the terms of Delaware’s 2-year-old settlement to take
effect.

“We are thrilled that our forward-thinking settlement with DuPont and
others is now $25 million more valuable to the State of Delaware,” said
Attorney General Kathy Jennings. “That’s 50% more to restore our natural
resources, to support public health initiatives in impacted communities
and to keep our neighbors healthy.”
PFAS in Delaware
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances are a class of chemicals that include
thousands of manmade compounds historically used in nonstick cookware,
food packaging and firefighting foam. The chemicals have been linked to
several illnesses ranging from infertility to different types of cancers.
A national study from the U.S. Geologic Survey showed that nearly half of
the tap water supply across the United States is estimated to have at
least one type of PFAS, with individuals in urban centers facing the most
risk.
In October, Jennings announced that the state had filed another lawsuit
against 13 chemical companies, including 3M Co. and Tyco Products, for
endangering the health of the public and natural resources.
This summer also saw multiple billion-dollar settlements from PFAS
manufacturers to hundreds of local and state governments across the
country.
