Hello Friends! I just spent 5 days in the remote mountains of
Susquehanna County and I thought you would like to hear about the
wildlife I saw in this area. I stayed with my parents who own and
operate Token Lake Resort, a 545 acre resort with a small lake and
cabins for rent. They are currently raising pheasants to replenish
the pheasant population in the state. They are beautiful birds and
some of the cocks will even come close when called. My dad has
perfected his pheasant call (they don't seem to respond to me when I
yell, "Here pheasant! Here pheasant!) I think they have figured out
that I'm human. One of the cocks will even follow my dad around as he
works outside, going as far as taking a ride on the 4-wheeler! Now
that would have been a sight to see!
I did see a few dear, including one young buck with small 3" horns
beginning. They come up toward the house every evening for the corn
my parents spread by the house. Turkey are plentiful in this area and
were spotted early one morning. They never stick around for too long,
but it's always a treat to witness these very skittish creatures in
the wild.
It rained every day of my visit, so the grass and vegetation are
growing rapidly. This keeps everyone in the area very busy with
mowing, which can take up a whole day for some residents. Also, the
heavy rain caused quite a few of the dirt roads to wash out. I think
people in these areas spend a lot more time and money maintaining
their dirt and gravel roads than most communities spend on paved
roads!
I hope to share some pictures of my trip soon. Thanks!
Katie
