Hi, What do you all do to stay safe when you are in the woods? Safe
from beers, bugs, and snakes. Also an occasional human, in the middle
of nowheres. Thanks for your time, Judy

I carry a small first aid kit. The main bug to watch for is
ticks. I've had Lymn's treatments. So now when I'm a a bad area
I usually put on some repellant. The main thing with bears in PA is
don't surprise them when their eating or get between them and their
cubs. Otherwise make some noise and they will usually move on. The
occasional human is probably of more concern. LOL. Sad but true.
Do you have many snakes(vipers) in your area? I haven't accidently
run into any dangerous ones. I know they are there and can be
found. I don't go looking for them.

Hi,
What exact brand do you use for your repellant? I seen 2 bears in
one day, a few days ago.
They scared the daylights out of me. My camera at the time was set on
macro with the first bear, he came up from behind me and seen me
first, he grunted, I looked for a deer, didnt see anything. But I did
tuck under a tree with a tree that had fallen on it. I thought I was
going to be charged by a deer again. Next thing I know hes 20 feet
from me circling around me so that he could get to the pond. Im
trying to take macros of him LOL took 3 HORRIBLE photos LOL.. My
heart was pounding and I coudnt get out of the woods quick enough.. 35
min. later seen another one. I couldnt get home quick enough then!
Yes we have snakes, today I got a so so photo of a rattler... not a
seller but proof lol....
I know all about the tick thing. They are bad here! A few years
back I had one in my arm pit and had to go to the hospital. We couldnt
get it out and we take them out of our animals. etc.. We have an over
population of them here thats for sure.
Take care, Judy

Hi Judy!   I'm not sure of the brand name, but I know they make a "Bear Spray"  it's kind of like mace or pepper spray, but especially for bears.  It's supposed to back them off at least enough for you to get away. It would probably take several minutes at least for the bear to recover!  I'll have to look online to see if I can find it and send you a link.  Of course, it is good to try to make noise so you don't sneak up on them...but taking wildlife photos kind of requires you to be quiet...doesn't it?!

As for protection from people in the woods, or anywhere for that matter, have you ever taken a R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) class?  They are terrific!  A lot of colleges or community centers offer them. If you Google it, you'll find information online.  It teaches you how to defend yourself and get out of bad situations and how your body language and attitude can keep you from getting into a bad situation.

Good Luck!
Kim  :)

Thanks Kim,
Yeah its a weird thing, I tip toe around in the woods, get what
photos I want then see a bear and start making racket. LOL I have
been a little shy now with going deep into the dense woods. Thanks
again, take care, Judy
