Hello all,

As we've done in previous years I'd like to give everyone the opportunity to share anything they want with the group at the workshop. This could be tips / tricks about collecting, experiences or stories, outreach activities, whatever you want really.

I'll leave time in the agenda for this, and if you want to put together any slides to share, please add them to this presentation. Best to limit yourself to about 5 minutes or so.

Thanks,

Nash

Good morning all, just wanted to give a shout out to the gentleman (Tony?) whose wife that made us the cloth bowl huggers. I used mine just this past week when I made soup in the microwave. Thanks again to you and your wife for the sweet token from our time together.

Yes, I just got one in the mail.  Thank you, Tony, and please thank your wife.  I haven’t seen it in person yet, but my husband opened the box for me and showed me on video.  I can’t wait to test it out!

On another note, I have a question for you bee collectors.  I was asked and I honestly couldn’t answer the question.  How many times have any of you been stung while collecting?  I said I have not heard a single time from any of you that you have been stung.  So, just wondering…

Lastly, for the workshop, you should count your hours as Continuing Education.  Be sure to put in your description in Connect - "CE Bee monitoring” and the category would be CE.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Val

Hi Val,

I was only stung once  by a  was by a wasp that I did not see in the net.

I have been attacked by a dog while netting in a Park. The owner said I frightened it with my net. I was 4 feet from the path with my back turned to the creature   geez!

I have been stung 3-4 times so far while trying to direct netted bees into the collection tube. They were on my fingers, so with their thicker skin, I suffered nothing more than just a little prick (and no classic welting).

Hi Val

I’ve only been stung once when I accidentally grabbed her in the net. The reaction went away quickly.

I get at least several stings per year, but it mostly happens when I take bees out of the net with my fingers so I can look at them closely or photograph them before I toss them in the vial. But the stings of the solitary bees are not bad - the pain is sharp for maybe half a minute then dissipates quickly.

Regarding stings:  I have had virtually no stings with a few exceptiosn - Like others, when handling nets where bees are trapped, and I have also had very brief mild stings at a nest aggregation of Agapostemon virescens where it is hard to avoid bumping into the bees when touching the ground  (I assume the stinger just went it a little way and then the bee moved on).  On the other hand, I have never been stung at the Andrena carlini aggregration. I was really quite stunned to discover how gentle the Andrena are - they really gave me a new perspective on bee behavior.

I am always super careful when there are honey bees around.

Hi everyone,
I had a conversation with Erin lately about how we count hours for the bee monitoring in-person workshop.  She said she is ok with you counting those hours as volunteer time if you want to.

So, if you want volunteer time more than CE, I’m leaving it up to you.

No matter which you choose, please just put bee monitoring in the name of your activity when you log it into HandsOn Connect so we can be sure to track all of the hours you do for this.  The most important thing is that you log the hours and we can find them.

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Thanks so much!
Val
