Hi all, I've gone out twice this month to try and collect bees by netting. Last week I went to French Creek state park in search of native plants in bloom. I haven't been successful in finding bees either outing. Do you have any tips or tricks? I went out in the middle of the day. How long do you sit and wait/watch? Do you go to more open areas?

Thanks,
Denise (Berks County)

Denise, the weather has often been too cold for bee activity recently. Even if it is sunny, the bees won't be active if the temperature is below around 60 F, and above 65 F is better. The bees are still out there! Yesterday I found a nice patch of Virginia waterleaf in bloom, but it was mostly cloudy, and I only found this single bee, but I think it is the waterleaf specialist.

Hi all,

I agree. I have started seeing more bees this weekend as the weather has warmed up. Please share your experiences if you went out collecting this weekend!

I wasn’t out collecting, but I did see these carpenter bees in the state forest on Tuesday. I assume they were eating (?) minerals. I’ve seen butterflies in groups like this but never bees.

There were several moths and butterflies & a Canada warbler along this road so a great spot overall!

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for sharing. This is interesting. Are you sure those were carpenter bees? Did you take other photos with the bees a bit closer?

No and no. The bee in the lower left corner has a really shiny abdomen, but maybe that’s not diagnostic. They also seemed pretty big, but that’s all relative. There were a lot of dead oak trees in the area.

Now I wish I had gotten more pictures. Ugh!
