PA Marcellus Shale gas activists Rally in Harrisburg
Pittsburgh’s Marcellus Protest group bringing activists from across SWPA to state capitol for Tom Corbett’s Jan. 18 Inauguration
Marcellus Protest, a Pittsburgh area grassroots group opposed to Marcellus shale gas drilling, is bringing regional activists to a statewide rally in Harrisburg on January 18, 2011.
Approximately 50 SWPA residents will be traveling to Harrisburg, to lend support to the rally and to invited Pittsburgh area speakers. Among those addressing the crowd will be Pittsburgh City Councilman Doug Shields, leader of the pioneering legislative fight to ban hydrofracking within city limits. Also speaking from the stage will be Briget Shields, a key organizer of Marcellus Protest.
The group leaves at 6 a.m., from the Teamster Temple, 4701 Butler St., Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood. There will be a second stop, off the Donegal exit of the PA turnpike, to pick up Westmoreland County participants.
The Harrisburg rally begins at 10:30 a.m., in Soldiers Grove, Commonwealth Ave. at Fisher Plaza, near the state capitol fountain.
Immediately following the rally an Activists’ Meeting will be held, in Harrisburg, offering rally participants from across the state an opportunity to share information, brain storm and plan future actions
The rally organizers, Gas Truth of Central PA, expect hundreds of Pennsylvanians to attend. Gas Truth is learning daily about more buses, car pools and vans that are being organized by activists from small towns and large cities throughout PA, including Lancaster, Butler, the Lehigh Valley, Honesdale, Philadelphia, Donegal, Wilkes Barre and York.
Rally demands
include:
Protect
PA water from the effects of drilling and fracking.
Proper air quality enforcement standards.
End "fast track" permitting of new wells in PA
No forced pooling. Freedom of choice for landowners.
Give local, municipal and township officials zoning authority.
