Just a sample of what it looks like.

holtzermann17 created Forum topic: Meeting times - and initial introductions

Please follow up in this thread to say what time would work for you for a
first meeting, and whether the same time might work for you in each of six
weeks of the course.  I've suggested 18:00 GMT if we're to meet on a
weekday, but can be somewhat flexible about this.  I'm also willing to meet
on weekends if that works better (15:00 GMT?).

Please make a note here - and perhaps add a few words of introduction.
We'll have a chance for more of that in the meeting too :)

By way of introducing myself, I'll mention that I'm currently in a Ph. D.
programme studying "problem solving and mathematical knowledge" - a topic
that's not unrelated to this course :).  I'll share more information about
that with you soon.

Best wishes, welcome, and I hope to hear back as to what time and dates will
work for you for our first meeting.

Joe

Hi Maria:

Not sure if I understand your note, but a perhaps useful complementary
example is the rather engaged discussion that's already going on in
the course that Marisa is running (with my help).

http://p2pu.org/general/open-governance-and-learning

I sure hope that the Short Calculus course will attain a comparable
level of engagement. In a course that small it does significantly
depend on individuals. I don't mind nagging everyone for a while at
the beginning (because hopefully if we get off on the right foot all
will go well from there on...).

As for the math for game developers course, I've gotten over 15
applicants so far - I haven't yet gone through all of the applicants
to make a final selection (I have in mind space for 10). That will
have to happen soon, hopefully tomorow evening.

Hiya Maria,
Like usual I am a little off - didn't quite understand these last messages
about forums.
Question 1: I don't quite get broadcasting either since I don't seem to get
a copy even though it says "sending to all 12 participants..." and including
me there are 12.
Question 2: is it possible to add [P2PU@MathFuture] to messages like this as
when we get messages from [Math2.0] or p2pu? This is really convenient when
sorting mail.
Question 3: I am having some trouble setting up synchronous meetings so I
created a video with class 1 and posted it on my wiki - I think I
understood from you that this is okay. (See:
http://classroomk12.wikispaces.com/P2PU+CSMI )

Thanks,

Some answers to myself :)

Broadcast:
1. My copy as administrator of "broadcast" arrived 8 hours after I
broadcast. I checked this with my one previous "broadcast" and same. I am
sure it is some setting (and so my fault), but at least I am getting my
messages and so I assume others are too.

Forum:
1. Thank-goodness one of my participants understands the discussion forum
for courses and has taken the lead and the process has started and I am
getting regular updates.
2. So far I see only text. We will have to do a "Kirby" thing and check what
kinds of texts and embeds are possible.

Sometime when I have a moment I will make some tiny screencasts - I am sure
there are others like me who (a) never read handbooks and (b) don't like to
experiment online :).

I just wanted to post a sample of how a forum letter arrives to a participant, and it was a good example of a forum post. Belatedly, I realized all people reading this are members of the course organizer course and as such receive a lot of forum letters :-) Sorry about the confusion.

Maybe you can put them in the "course proposal" page at the wiki, or else make a separate orientation page:  http://mathfuture.wikispaces.com/SuggestCourses

Oh no Maria – your letter was great for someone like me! Thank goodness you wrote. I didn’t even realize there was a forum. I am so over my head with the kind of interaction expected in p2pu.  (I am basically a 1-1 person or 1->many person and this is a many<->many all at once) Your little note made me realize another part of the p2pu course software.  I just didn’t know how to use it, can’t/won’t read manuals and don’t like to experiment with others so am hesitant to try anything online. Slowly, slowly I am learning. But it is still rather overwhelming.

Linda
