Hi Everyone

I hope you've all had a good weekend, and are ready to get going on
the first (mini) assignment for the Digital Journalism course.

Getting to know each other will be a really important aspect of making
this class a success. We've got participants from just about every
continent (excepting Australia) in this group, and from a wide variety
of backgrounds. We think that this will make for some great
conversations and discussions, and generate some really exciting work,
but we'll need to get to know each other before that can happen.

So, to get the ball rolling, we'd like to ask you to do the following:

*Upload an image to your profile. It's always nicer to see an image
(of your face, or anything else you feel comfortable with) in the
little block next to your name. We love the P2PU logo as much as
anyone else, but we'd prefer to see you!

*Use the Forum on the P2PU site to introduce yourselves. Some people
have started doing this already, and it's a really useful way to start
conversations. The forum is very easy to use. Just click on the link
that says "Introductions" and type your message.

* Read the article entitled "Covering the Cops" by Calvin Trillin.
This reading is in the Recommended Reading list, and there is also a
link to it in the Forum. This is a great introduction to old-school
beat-style reporting, and since it was written in 1986, it's a good
foundation for looking at how news media worked back then, and how
things have changed. We've posted a couple of questions about the
article to get the discussion started, but what we'd really like to
hear are your opinions.

If you could get both of these forum posts up by the end of Wednesday
June 9th in whatever time zone you are in, it would be great. Then we
can take it from there.

I'm going to follow this mail up with another one about setting up
meeting times, but in the meantime, if you have any questions or
comments, please feel free to send them to the group. This is our
mailing list, so don't feel shy about using it!

All the best
Bekka
