Welcome on this discussion place,
This newsgroup's aim is to discuss the concept of "Personal Data Manager" tool, get some feedback:
Do you think this tool could be helpfull to you or to any other people you know.
What are you expecting from this kind of tool.
And any other subject (related to PDM) you'd like to discuss.
The idea of this tool came to me 2 years ago (in May/June 2004). I started to write a description of the concept and asked people arround me what they were thinking about it. I did not only ask to developpers, but also to people who are just computer users.
The feedback was quite positive and people really thought this could help them in their day to day use of computer softwares (mainly office applications).
But at that time, it wasn't clear to me how this tool could integrate with existing applications, especially the email client. My feeling was that it required a modification of the application. I thought that the best candidate to implement this kind of tool was the companies developping the applications. I didn't know how I could contact them to "sell" them the concept.
Then I discovered GMail and I was quite happy to discover the concept of label, which was close to what I had in mind.
And recently, the need for this tool + the whish to develop an open source project + the disapointment not to see it coming + a clearer idea on how to implement it, made me take the decision to start implementing something.
So, I have started to develop a prototype (persistence + GUI supporting folder tree management, drag&drop of file and urls and "open" feature to launch the native application. It is not very nice (as you can see on the screenshots) so I will make it a bit more "sexy" before delivering it.
