Different Pune-based institutes and industries would assist the
OzonAction group of United Nations Environment Action, to check the
level of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and Hydrochlorofluorocarbons
(HCFCs) in the atmosphere.
The regional network coordinator of United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), Atul Bagai said that it is collaborating with the
scientific community and research institutes across the region who can
develop GenNext technology in curbing the level of HFCs and HCFCs in
the ozone layer.
National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) is one of the institutes that is
working on the project.
"Pune remains a prime location as institutes like NCL are already
working on it. The entire process is a part of the Montreal Protocol,"
Bagai added (see box).
As per the ozone layer assessment released last by UNEP in 2006,
different interventions had prevented in spreading of
chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) in the atmosphere. But the global HFC
emissions projections would increase strongly after 2013 and
significantly exceed previous estimates after 2015.
"The effort is now to bring down the spreading of HFC and HCFCs in the
ozone layer," said Stephen Anderson, co-chairperson and retired
director of United States Environment Protection Agency.
UNEP had organised a seminar on 'International Protection in Ozone
Layer Protection and Achieving Ozone Layer Protection with greenhouse
gas emission impact' at Mahratta Chamber of Co...
