Hello Makers and Hackers,

Eddie Here. I'm from Deloitte Centre for the Edge Australia, an applied research think-tank that looks at all things disruption.

We have been working on a report about the Australian Maker Movement that builds on previous report from the United States.  See here - http://dupress.com/articles/a-movement-in-the-making/

I am looking for confirmation about the number of hackerspaces in Australia. I've been looking through http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/Australia but wanted to double check with y'all to see if this is up to date.

The report is pretty inspiring - well, I think so anyway - and my intention through writing it is to help shine a light on this amazing movement so as to accelerate and nurture it even further.

Many thanks

Eddie

Hi Eddie,

You're always welcome to come in person and visit some of the hackerspaces in person to get a better feel..

When you say 'disruptive', that's handled differently here.

Personally, I think the amount of tolerance for innovation/disruptive-technology is extremely reduced in Australia compared to historical levels.

It also varies between hackerspaces too, depending on the people.

In any case, here's a page and you can see some random electronics/computer project I did as an exploration of modular electronics/computing:

Hi Eddie!

The hackerspaces list is quite up to date and I think all of the
currently operating hackerspaces (and a few non-operating) appear on
there. The current known operating list (IIRC) is:

The ones I have had direct contact with:
Artifactory (Perth)
HSBNE (Brisbane)
GC Tech Space (Gold Coast)
Robots & Dinosaurs (Sydney)
Hackerspace Adelaide (Adelaide)
CCHS (Melbourne)
East Gippsland Makerspace (Bairnsdale)

Ones I believe are operating
Newcastle Makerspace (Newcastle)

Possibly Operating
I heard about something going on with a Hobart hackerspace...

Kind of operating
West Coast Makers is seemingly operating but not regularly and doesn't
seem to be much more that a few friends with little interest outside
of their core group, we've tried making contact a few times with
little luck.
Miss Despoinas Hackerspace (Hobart) is a wildcard, no idea whats going
on there, they seem to still have a web presence but have yet to be
successfully contacted by the wider hackerspace community. Also dead
weird 1990's geocities-esque website.

The Hackerspaces in Australia are extremely diverse, and having been
to spaces in the USA, Western & Central Europe and Scandinavia I think
we rank up there with the best of them in terms of variety of
interests and community in the spaces. Let me know if there is
anything we can help you with and you are of course more than welcome
at the Artifactory if you ever find yourself over here in the (not so)
Wild West!

Happy Hacking!

Up in Queensland,  I've heard rumours of sunshine coast,  Toowoomba and Cairns wanting to start.

We had a visitor from Cairns a few weeks back (he's currently running an incubator and coworking space up there) and i sent him away to make it happen! He is back again on gold coast in a few weeks I think so will check status.
