Hi folks,

There's some interest at CCHS in Melbourne for a group build of the
OpenVizsla open source USB 2.0 high speed protocol analyzers.

The OpenVizsla project started as a kickstarter a few years ago to
build an open hardware FPGA-based USB analyzer that could manage
480Mbps high speed. The project hit some severe problems, but one of
the original people behind it picked it up and brought it to
completion.

Now the hardware is shipping. I only backed for a bare PCB, which I
got last week, but assembled boards are expected to ship soon. We're
thinking of making some more of our own.

At the numbers we have interested so far (3-4 boards in Melbourne,
plus 1-2 in NSW) the cost for a PCB plus components will be $80-$100
each. The other cost is a solder paste stencil (optional) which would
be $25-$45 each.

We were thinking people at some other spaces might be interested in
building them as well (individuals too, but from a logistical point of
view - also sharing the stencil cost - it's nicer to send a couple of
packages to a couple of spaces than lots of packages to individuals.)
Obviously this brings down the cost for everyone as well.

Building an OpenVizsla is also an opportunity for hackerspace members
to get some experience & "level up" on SMD board assembly - the boards
are relatively involved (0402 parts, 0.5mm pitch QFP) but I think
someone new to SMD could assemble them (in a helpful environment.)

If you're interested please let me know. Feel free to forward this
message on. This isn't a moneymaking venture, just a chance to pool
some resources and get an open source hardware tool. :)
