Catalyst - Digital Fabrication

In 2013-2014 The Edge will develop and facilitate programming, projects and training in digital fabrication. Digital fabrication includes additive and subtractive manufacturing, modelled after existing initiatives such as the Fab Lab, Hackerspace and Techshop, with a focus on personal digital fabrication.

The Digital Fabrication Catalyst will receive extended access to the open spaces and resources at The Edge. In return, they will work as a mentor, an inspiration to community and provide facilitated development of new creative programming with and by The Edge community. They will also receive access to The Edge team and partners for technical, curatorial and collaborative support. They will also have access to State Library collections and staff expertise.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Articulating an understanding of digital fabrication which may include industrial design, 3D printing, CNC milling machinery and training.

• Working with The Edge team to develop engagement tools and systems that will establish The Edge as a community hub for practice in the field. These tools and systems will reflect The Edge’s community-centric approach to engagement, safety and industry best practise.

• Further develop relationships with community, education and industry partners - both based in metropolitan and regional centres - to ensure that the digital fabrication programming meets the diverse needs of Queensland community.

• Working with The Edge community, providing the facilitated development of new creative programming to be delivered at The Edge and with established partner organisations.

• Understanding and application of current trends and research emerging practises in digital fabrication, to ensure the investment in resources is timely and in keeping with identified trends in community, education and industry.

• Working with The Edge team to develop and implement a modular, competency based learning framework that will ensure that community members accessing digital fabrication programming are competent with the established practise and processes.
