OK, Here is how I see this happening:

1) We need members. I'd appreciate if you mention this group where appropriate.
2) We need to select a book
3) We need to allow time for participants to GET the book (if they haven't already got it)
4) We need a schedule of some kind to adhere to (otherwise we'll go off the rails a bit)
5) There is no 5

I've set the expressions of interest poll to expire on the 25th May. By then I'd like to well into step (2) and maybe on to step (3)

I wonder if somewhere local (like bookware) would be interested in
doing a group discount, if 25+ people were all going to buy the same
book (albeit posted to different places. Then again we could organise
one drop-off per state capital via the UG).

Hmmm. Or it might be worthwhile talking to the publishers directly about getting deals on PDF copies.

preferably not PDF, epub or mobi works much better, though, yes an
electronic format of some form

Have you looked at Manning Books (www.manning.com) all their books can be purchased as eBook or Print+eBook and through their Deal of the Day email alert (www.manning.com/free/dotd.html) I've purchased quite a few eBooks at bugger all prices depending on the deal at around the $10 US mark.  One thing good about them is that unlike some other eBook suppliers theirs are all DRM free (your name is at the bottom of each page) allowing you to print them, copy them on to multiple devices, etc.
