Hi Maddy,

can you explain who you are reporting to and for what purpose?

Maddy,

It is my understanding that consultant archaeologists are included under the Fair Work Act in the Professional Employees Award 2010, which does specify minimum wages and conditions. This award is based upon levels of qualifications and experience. Consultant archaeologists and anthropologists tend to earn more than the minimum wage levels specified in this award, but this tends to vary because of different employment situations across the country, and competition for qualified and experienced personnel in some areas.

Regards,

Neale

Hi Gary
I am doing a short project for the VAHC summarising education and employment opportunities for Aboriginal people in cultural heritage management. I am aware that we are not covered by an award, but thought I'd do a straw poll and see if people are using a similar range of awards as the basis of payment. Thank you to all the people who replied to me directly; as expected there is no consistency, so that does not make my summarising any easier! One person stated that this information is commercial-in-confidence. I will state again that specific pay rates are not my area of interest, just the classification systems in use, if any. Another person mentioned that students who are considering spending thousands of dollars on education in archaeology or related heritage disciplines, or others who want to upgrade their CHM skills, would find it useful to know the range of salaries that they could expect to attract depending on their levels of experience and qualifications. A project for someone else to consider, perhaps? Beyond my scope, I'm afraid. But thank you everyone for your responses.
Maddy

My experience in a consulting company was that the rates of pay were
tied towards the pay scales of environmental consultants and what you
could negotiate with your employer. Of course you had to be able to
bring it in in terms of fees which was the downfall of many with
inflated resumes and opinions of themselves.
