Hi everyone,
Apologies for cross posting
Please see the email below from Lynley Wallis regarding the situation
in Brisbane this morning and forward this message on to others as
appropriate. The AAA members only email list appears to be down,
presumably because it's hosted at UQ.
Queensland flood information for AAA members – Thursday, 13 January
2011, ca 11 am
Dear colleagues,
We would like to pass on some information about the flood situation in
Qld.
Many of us here have received texts, emails and phone calls from
concerned friends and colleagues elsewhere. We greatly appreciate
all of your thoughts and well wishes. It has been very reassuring the
way people have reached out, and in Brisbane itself people are
generally very calm and everyone is pulling together to help each
other.
Many parts of Brisbane have lost power and consequently as you might
imagine, communication is not great for some of us (mobile phones and
computers running out of batteries, university email services affected
etc), and so we are doing what we can to contact colleagues and
friends to ensure they are safe. AS FAR AS WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO
DETERMINE (current as at Thursday 13/01/11, ca 11 am), most of our
archaeological colleagues are safe and on high ground, though several
have reported suffered property losses, and in some cases these have
been extensive.
One concern that will emerge in coming days is a lack of access to
petrol, bread, milk, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Many shops were
sold out of staples by Tuesday afternoon and the situation in some
areas is getting worse. Now many of these shops are shut because of
the absence of power, and many roads etc are cut so resupplying those
shops that are open is difficult.
We (archaeology) are a relatively small and tight knit community, so
if anyone is in trouble or needs assistance of any sort (eg a place to
stay, food, people’s time to help clean up etc), please let us know if
we can help you in any way. Many of us will be involved in community
clean up efforts, and are very willing to help colleagues who have
been affected if we can.
It has been pointed out that many of our consulting colleagues in
Brisbane, Toowoomba and surrounding areas who do not have the benefit
of a regular salary may not be able to work in the SE QLD area for
many weeks, if not months. This may severely affect their businesses,
livelihoods and ability to keep working to support their families. We
would urge you to spare a thought for these members of our community,
and ask if colleagues interstate or in unaffected areas have work you
are able to offer these people to please think about doing so.
The University of Qld St Lucia campus has been greatly affected, and
many of you may have some aerial photographs of it on the news. I
visited the university this morning, and the Michie Building (where
most of the UQ archaeologists are housed) and their new facilities in
the Otto Hirsch Building are safe and dry. Only comparatively few
buildings have been affected by the flood waters, though the playing
fields, pool, tennis courts, roads and several car-parks under 1-2 m
of water. Many houses along Coleridge Street and in the low lying
areas of Sir Fred Schoenell Drive (and adjacent streets) have suffered
extensive flood damage - many students live in these areas and have
undoubtedly been affected. I do not know what state the Gatton campus
is in (though understand from earlier emails from UQ administration on
Monday that the campus had been closed from then), nor how the
Griffith or QUT campuses have fared.
We will keep you informed as best we can given our limited email
access, and again, thank you for all of your concern – it is most
comforting to know we are in your thoughts. We can access the AAA
facebook site (
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Australian-Archaeological-
Association/117756844928110?ref=ts), though not the AAA email list at
present, so that is a useful mechanism to get in touch with us. Please
feel free to forward this information to any colleagues.
