Dear AACAI members,

The NSW / ACT Chapter would like to invite you to a FREE presentation by Dr John Kinahan on the Namib Desert Archaeological Survey. The presentation will be heldat the Australian Museum on Thursday 23rd September from 5:30pm. Flyer attached.

Dr Kinahan has over 30 years experience as an archaeologist, with special emphasis on desert and semi-arid zone areas. He has served as curator of archaeology at the National Museum of Namibia before turning to independent contract archaeology in 1995 and since then has carried out more than 120 contract surveys and excavations in various parts of Africa, although mainly in Namibia.

Johns current focus is the Namib Desert Archaeological Survey, a large-scale regional project covering the human occupation of the desert from the late Pleistocene to the early colonial period. The Survey is unusual in that it is entirely funded via contract investigations for mining and related developments. Part of the Surveys mission is to influence developers perception of the desert, and to ensure preservation of sites and archaeological landscapes that sustained nomadic hunters and pastoralists until the end of the last century. In the absence of local archaeological institutions, and very limited regulation of heritage impacts, the Survey is attempting to explore and document one of the most interesting, and threatened, archives of long term human adaptation to extreme desert conditions.

Please join us! Drinks and nibbles provided.

Cheers,

Good morning everyone,

In 2009, with generous support of  NSW Heritage Grant, I compiled and published my 169 page "Illustrated glossary of Australian rural fence terms" available as a free 7.5 MB download from the Heritage Branch website (URL: http://www.heritage.nsw.gov.au/03_index.htm#G-I and scroll down to "Illustrated glossary").

I am currently preparing a second edition planned for completion in early 2011. This will be re-designed for easier use, and include additional terms and illustrations. Like the first edition, it will focus on RURAL fences; urban and suburban fences are specifically excluded for a range of reasons.

This is your opportunity to contribute to making the Glossary more comprehensive and accurate. I welcome any suggestions of corrections, additional examples of contemporary or modern illustrations or references, locations of examples etc. All suggestions will be acknowledged.

Please contact me off-list with your suggestions.

To get the widest possible coverage, I have posted this request on several groups. My apologies for subscribers who received cross-posts.

Many thanks, John
