Hi All,

I am using Quantum GIS for creating mapping in reports, and was wondering if people know of good base maps (for NSW particularly) . I tend to use the topographic map series available on topoview disc and aerials if supplied by clients. Are there aerials and/or other base maps available that don’t cost thousands or have copyright issues? What is the group’s understanding of the copyright issues for google earth and the possibility/ease of use?

Cheers,

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa,

Check the plugin directory for QGIS. There used to be a plugin that allowed you to display open street maps data and I think another that displayed google maps products, both as base maps. That was a couple of years ago though (I no longer use QGIS), and I suspect these plugins will have developed a lot more since then.

There are copyright issues associated with G-maps data/products, read the EULA it will explain all. Last I looked it was the case that commercial use was not permitted, but provided you kept the image/data credits (the feint text at the bottom of the maps) in your image, educational/non-commercial use was permitted within the EULA.  I wouldn't use them in a consulting report for instance, unless the EULA has changed.

Regards,
Mick

This is a perennial problem.

Google Earth does have many limitations on its commercial use however I might also point out that as you presumably may be using them for commercial use have you checked out the cost of using them?

Six also provides maps and aerial but they would have to be georeferenced.

I use the TopoRaster 1:25,000 series for NSW available on DVD which can be be download as GEO TIFF.

Also Geosciences Australia has their 1:250,000 series available free for download.

Cheers

Hi Vanessa

I also use Quantum GIS, sometimes with open street maps layers.

I get mapsheet data from  http://www.ga.gov.au/  which has roads, topo etc.

For aerials I have used  http://www.city2see.com/ which was reasonably priced and had georeferenced images, at least for Metro areas.  I think google doesn't give permission to use their images and I recall they were not georeferenced.

Please let the list know if you find other resources

Steven

Hi Vanessa,

You should be aware that ANY publication of topo maps from state and Commonwealth agencies requires permission. This is particularly so if the publication is commercial e.g. a consultant's report. Having said that, I've never heard of anyone getting busted for using them.

Hi V,

We use TopoView.  It is already Geo-referenced and you can put AHIMS data (and other client data) on top of it in a new layer.  Never used QGIS but I'm presuming it works all the same.

Once you buy it there are no issues with using the data for commercial use (it is actually one of their selling points).

Cheers

Chris
