Hi all,

At work we're considering purchasing Resharper or JustCode for our team. We primarily build web applications and the vast majority of the team has not used either so they're pretty open. Wondering if anyone has any insights:
  1. Is having one of these tools considered "standard issue" in .NET development teams and which is more commonly found in the industry? Is the trend changing in favour of one or the other?

  2. What are your personal experiences with Resharper and JustCode? Objectively is there a clear winner or does it mostly come down to personal preference/what you're most familiar with?
Any insights will be a great help! Thanks!

I would say that Resharper is much more common, almost defacto standard. Developers will either love it or hate it. I have it installed but most of the options turned off as I find it slows down VS too much and can be distracting.

I would say resharper is almost becoming standard. Most people I know who use a refactoring tool use it. I have not used justcode so I won't comment on it.

Hi Tim,

I'm a Resharper user and I love it.  It makes it a lot easier to do many of my most common tasks.  Here are the things that personally same me heaps of time:
  • Navigate to file, class, member
  • Move class or classes to a different file and or namespace
  • Renaming anything
  • Reorder method parameters (automatically reordering any calls to the mothod)
  • Extract variables from expressions in a method
  • Auto creating and setting properties/fields in constructors
  • Auto generating constructors (especially nice when working with immutable objects)
  • Explore incoming and outgoing calls from methods.  This shows in a tree structure so you can keep drilling down or out so you can easily see where calls will come from.
  • Unit Test runner
There are many other features which I don't have time to go into, but basically I love it and make sure to install it right after Visual Studio on any machine I'm going to be using for dev work.  I've not used JustCode my self and I don't know anyone else who does so I can't comment on how it compares.

One of the great things you would like about Resharper if you are doing web development is that it's renaming is intelligent enough to pickup string literal references in web files like .aspx etc.

I use Resharper and love it.

I've never used Justcode either.

+1 Resharper.

I have my own Telerik Devcraft license so actually could use Justcode if I wanted to. I've just never installed it to look at it. Maybe its brilliant but I'm happy with Resharper and keep upgrading to new versions.

As for performance with Resharper, it used to be an issue a long time ago (am talking 8 years ago when I started using it) but the overhead of it now is low enough for it to not make a difference.

Jetbrains have been receiving my hard earned for ReSharper since v1.5

If I were a asked to use a telerik product instead... I cant imagine being very enthusiastic. :)

I'd be interested to hear someone justify not using ReSharper or turning off most of the options. Or hating it.

Best excuse: it doesn't provide much of anything if you're using F#. :)

Disclaimer: I work for Telerik in Australia, makers of JustCode.

Both ReSharper and JustCode are excellent. Of course, I'm biased towards JustCode. There are a few scenarios where it shines. I particularly like some of the most recent improvements we've made: http://www.telerik.com/products/justcode/whats-new.aspx

If you have any questions or like to see a demo (or two), please feel free to drop me a line: john.b...@telerik.com.

Like most people in this thread, I swear by Resharper.
I don't have any experience with JustCode to provide a comparison, but the fact that the majority of people here have tried and continue to use R# should be a good signal :-)

I use Resharper. I also have my own Telerik DevCraft license so could install JustCode. I've not done so as I don't want to confuse myself. Often I use features of Resharper and don't even realise its a Resharper feature and not a built in VS feature. It's not until you try to use VS without Resharper installed that you notice them not there.
I suppose I could try JustCode installed at the same time as Resharper but the risk there would be an additional dependency on another tool. (ie another tool I can't live without lol)

Don't mix your drinks people...

I can't live without resharper. When my company didn't pay for a license I bought my own and if they stop paying I will buy a license again.

It's the same as say a carpenter.

Some carpenters will be happy with the basic hammer from bunnings while others will go for something with more quality.
