Hi Claire – can you pass this along to folks?  Oyster-Adams is invited to join a PTA seminar sponsored by Greater DC Cares which will connect us with free consultants that are designed to help strengthen the functioning of the OCC.  All the info is attached below – if it really worth going even tho the OCC doesn’t need basic info and support, as it will be an opportunity to lay out the needs of the OCC and perhaps get some good, free help to have them met.

I’m coordinating Oyster-Adams’ participation in the Servathon, which is why the original email came to me.

Hi Ms. Garrett,

Greater DC Cares’ Servathon 2008 is just around the corner and this year, as part of our Campaign for Public Schools, we are offering a new Parent/Teacher Support Organization Initiative.

As a participating school of Servathon 2008 we would like to invite members of your parent/teacher body, as well as your administration to participate in our free training seminar to strengthen parental and community involvement.

The upcoming Parent/Teacher Support Organization Initiative will help parents, teachers and school administration, in correlation with project consultants and experienced trainers, identify the basic steps needed to create or strengthen an organization, such as a PTA, that fosters a thriving community supported learning environment.

Each participant, if they wish, will be matched with a knowledgeable project consultant who will help brainstorm and manage the implementation of the lessons learned at the training.  Our expert trainers will be available to field questions about the process.  An agenda of the training seminar is included below for your review.

Date: May 14th, 2008

When: 6:30PM-8:30PM

Where: Greater DC Cares Offices’, 1727 I Street, NW

Metro: One block from both Farragut North and Farragut West

Dinner will be provided

Please RSVP to Gregory Hill at gh...@greaterdccares.org or 202.777.4463.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could identify, and forward this message and the flyer (also included below) along to any active and engaged parents, or teachers who would be interested or could benefit from this free service.  We also would ask that you post the flyer in your school, and/or distribute them to your staff.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.  We really appreciate your willingness to be part of our process to build safer and stronger communities in the DC region.  Thanks again for your cooperation and all that you do!

Sincerely,

Gregory A. Hill

A Step-By-Step Training on Building a Parent/Teacher Support Organization

In January 2008, Greater DC Cares launched a year-long “Volunteer for DC Public Schools!” Campaign.  Throughout this Campaign, projects will engage thousands of volunteers in our region in improving school facilities, providing pro bono consulting for teachers and administrators, offering tutoring and mentoring for students, and more.

At Greater DC Cares, we feel that when our community members collaborate to strengthen our schools, they improve our communities.  We also feel that when parents, teachers and principals work together – and communicate, our school systems improve and so does our children’s education.

If your school does not have a Parent/Teacher Support Organization, we want to give you the tools to create one.

Get Involved:  Whether you are a parent, teacher, administrator or principal, if you want to learn how to create a parent/teacher support organization in your school, then attend our free training session and be matched with a project consultant to help you build an organization, step-by-step.  We will also have experts in the field available for consultation.

Parent/Teacher collaboration is a powerful tool.

Date of Training: May 14th, 2008

Session Title: Step-by-Step: Building Parent Support Organizations

Where: Greater DC Cares, 1725 I Street, NW

Metro: Farragut North / Farragut West

Time: 6:30PM – 8:30PM

Dinner Provided

Parent/Teacher Support Organizations Help to Build Bridges between Schools and Homes

  • Parents and teachers can collaborate with school officials to face school challenges and provide solutions
  • Parents can help steer their child’s education
  • Parents and teachers can build a safe learning environment
  • Parent/teacher collaboration means stronger schools and stronger communities

According to existing research in A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement: “When parents are involved in their children’s education at home, they do better in school.  And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they go to are better.”

Contact Gregory A. Hill at 202.777.4463 or at gh...@greaterdccares.org to find out how you can make a difference in your school.  Get Involved.
