Ijust wanted to let you know that we rebuild these and you can send us your core or you can have us rebuild you one from many of the cores that we have. We then go through your gearbox and can basically give it back to you as slightly better than factory.
But at SpridgetMania, we have all kinds of spare parts, we have the experience to be able to put these gearboxes together so that that will last you. We go through them very carefully, we test and inspect them and run them through the gears. We replace all of the worn parts and then you get a gearbox that is basically just like it was when the car was new.
One of the things that we do is we have the tail housing section, and of course, we install a new Bush in the back of that. We actually have a yoke that we have out of a drive shaft and we can put that in there.
We can check that for true and get these to where that there's virtually no play in them at all. After we've checked those of course, we then can install the new rear seal like we've done on this one. That's just about to get hooked up to this gearbox right here and then of course on the other end, on the front end, we have the new covers which have an area that's machined to accept the new rubber seal. So you get sealed up on both sides both where you get leaks. We do everything we can to mitigate that as best we can.
We even have the ability to take some of the original main shafts and you know, and you know this area that rides on the bearing, eEven if there's one where the hardened surface where it rides well on the bearing is bad we can have these actually received we can have them re-- tipped so basically we can have you know main shafts that are effectively brand new.
So you can send us your old gearbox as a core and we can either rebuild that specific box or you can just have us build you one. We can do straight cut gear sets or we can do the traditional 22G1100 gear set in these gearboxes. Really anything you want us to-do.
Give us a call, or come to the website and send us a chat and we'll take care of all of your Sprite for speed ribcase gearbox needs.

This is a good way to box up the ribcase gearboxes. We've got a cardboard box here, it's a double walled cardboard box and inside it you can see that we've got the rib case basically bolted to a 15 by 15 bit of plywood. There's a slight hole that's drilled in it because as you know the rib case input shaft will stick out so if you just you know either use a hole saw or a drill bit that's bigger than the input shaft diameter you just sort of mark it and you can just mount that up with some bolts to that and then that'll keep it steady in the box.
Then if you just support the rear end of it, we actually are shipping this one out and we have a gear shift lever on it, so put a bit of cardboard around that. Then we're going to fill the bottom with all kinds of packing and it's going to go out in this box. The box is 16 by 16 by 36 and that seems to be a bit just about the right size for shipping one of these. If we send you one this is the way we're probably going to send it to you and if you want you can send your core back you might be able to use the same box and you could probably use the same piece of wood as well and you'll be all set so that's the way you want to do it.
Here's a rebuilt gearbox ready to install in any Sprite or Midget. New bearings and synchros have been installed, as well as any new gears and parts as needed. This is the best way to cure an excessively noisy gear box. Or if you have a gearbox that jumps out of gear, this is the ticket!
If you are changing from smooth to rib case transmission, you will need to address the shift lever. Original smooth and ribbed levers are not the same, check the photo for the proper dimensions. Ribbed is longer.
Another option is to purchase a ribbed gearbox and add-on a ribbed lever that we custom weld here. This way you can use the ribbed lever in your new gear box. Let us know in the notes of your order which one you prefer!
Some people have asked us about the front seal on these transmissions. All our smooth and ribbed transmissions are set- up with the original scroll seal that slings oil back into the transmission. The oil reservoir is below the height of this seal, so they generally would only leak when the car is parked pitched with the rear end upward on a big hill, such that oil can flow out of the front shaft. Should this occur, that oil will run out of the bottom of the bell housing through the weep hole. If you check your transmission oil level routinely, you would top up any lost oil. So the need for a lip seal on the front cover is lost on us, unless you live in San Francisco and routinely park your Spridget on the street with it's tail up-hill.
**Also: when changing from smooth to ribbed, the clutch fork is NOT the same! We offer ribbed case forks here. If you are replacing your trans with the same type, just be sure you have the correct one!
Core exchange is required if you want the core credit refunded-we need a good rebuildable rib case in return so we can rebuild it for the next client. We'll refund $125 on receipt of your rebuildable core. Cores need to be inspected internally before a core refund can be issued, to determine if the internal parts are damaged beyond repair.
Cores must be completely drained of all oil before return, otherwise they make a mess in the box and can even fall out of the box during shipment. Any oil soaked or leaking transmission cores will be subject to a reduced or NO core credit.
The team at Hardy's are true professionals and know their subject well. The team overhauled the gearbox, overdrive, rear axle and driveshafts of my 1979 Triumph Spitfire and the car now drives as if it were new. This firm is highly recommended.
y elderly father had no where else to go to repair his gearbox on his old Jaguar. I shall be forever grateful to all of you. Your welcome, kindness, consideration, patience and time you gave him was truly heart warming and the smile you put on his face I shall never forget. The Jaguar runs today better than new. If only a few more companies would do this much, what a better place this world would be.
Bill and his team have done a brilliant job on my Gearbox. They replaced my synchro rings (3rd,4th,5th and 6th) and replaced the clutch on my Hyundia ix35. Most people didnt want to touch it or was very over priced. Hardy engineering was very good with price, quickness and honest.
Just a very quick note to say how pleased I am with what you have done to the car. The 3.54 final drive has absolutely transformed it, the torque from the engine is more than capable, but also sorting out the gear lever has made it a much nicer car to drive. I just want to get out and enjoy it so thank you very much for what you have done and hope to see you out in the summer.
I used Hardy Engineering 5 years ago for my Volvo XC90, new rear diff and the result was perfect and great value compared to any other option I had at the time. Returned to them today for some further advice on another vehicle. A trustworthy and reputable company worth travelling to like me from Essex!!
How refreshing to find a company that really know their subject and offer a very friendly and exceptionally helpful service. They assessed the problems with my MGB gearbox, quoted for the work, and the completed work had no hidden extras.
Just picked up my RAV4 from Hardy engineering from having the gearbox overhauled. My car feels like a completely different car with a very quiet G/Box and easy clutch, really pleased with this service and would recommend them anytime. Bill and his team were very polite, informative and very professional, Excellent service, would definitely use them again.
Thanks so much to Bill and the team for the overdrive and gearbox repair to my GT6. The team were always accommodating and helped me understand the work needed and what it would cost me. The car is now running brilliantly and has been transformed by the work done.
Had my BJ8 for three days end of May with Bill and his outstanding team to renew the gearbox, overdrive and differential. Car drives fantastic now. Bill had all parts on stock and even found a used rear wheel bearing to fix the car by Friday cob. It was worth to come over from Cologne for this job. I enjoyed every minute with the guys. Friendly and supportive staff. Highly recommended in every aspect.
Managed to drop off my transit for diff repairs early, should have been on 10th very good welcome, nice people. just hope the diff is not as bad as it sounds. in there capable hands now. it was nice to see bits of gearboxes and diffs again, I miss working on then in my youth. Thanks boys see you soon..
Fantastic service from Bill & the team. Dug me out of a hole whereby I could not find help over in France where I live. Spent months over here trying to get a dead differential resolved. Ended up contacting Bill following a referral from the local dealership. Quick as a flash I was able to get the support & confidence in their knowledge & immediately felt all was not lost with my car. axle shipped over , assessed, repaired & returned.
Hi, Just a quick thank you for a job well done. I am very pleased with work you did on my 1275 gearbox. It now back back in the car running well. I would have no hesitation in recommending your company. Thanking you once again.
Hi Bill. What a refreshing change to find an engineering shop that will work on older vehicles with genuine interest and great attention to detail. My old and rare VW LT 4x4 camper van came to you with a very badly worn rear axle and you have rebuilt it using impossible to find parts and is now like new. Not an easy job on a 4 ton truck, but we are very pleased with the results.
We have just returned from a 4,500 mile trip of a lifetime to Iceland where we have driven about 1000 miles off road in very technical terrain.
