Withthat simple introduction, the famed bass man starts strumming his instrument. The funk flowed, and we were there to witness it. Watch Hughes play and share the story behind one of the most recognizable bass lines in popular music history. Also look in our August issue for Don Harrison's feature story, "It's Their Thing," about Hughes and the Richmond band whose song has been sampled by performers like Jay Z, the Wu-Tang Clan, Public Enemy, Coolio and EPMD.

Then my mom issued me a challenge: For one month, spend 20 minutes a day, rain or shine, outside moving my body. I would have to track my outdoor time using the NatureDose app, which tallies up my time spent in the fresh air, but also quantifies the quality of that outdoor time based on my GPS location and exposure to beneficial elements like tree cover, distance from roads and buildings, and air quality.

My first walk was on a cold, gray February evening. I had just finished a long day of work and all I wanted to do was chill. The house was cozy, it was getting dark, and frankly, I just wanted to lie on the couch. But somehow I mustered the energy, laced up my sneakers, grabbed my jacket, and headed out.

Typically, going for a solo walk on a cold night is not my idea of a good time. But a few minutes in, I stopped thinking about my Xbox and started noticing the dwindling sunlight rippling across the surface of the pond. The cool breeze felt good on my face. I picked up the pace and stretched my legs and felt my tight back loosen up. By the time I got back home, I felt lighter, happier, and the stress of the day was behind me.

I was seeing it happen in real time. Suddenly I was going to bed and waking up two to three hours earlier than what had become my norm and sleeping much more soundly than I had before this grand experiment began. I felt sharper during the workday, too. I was banging out reports for work in half the time.

NatureDose is an app that measures your therapeutic time in nature. Set your weekly goal, then go outside and feel good. Download NatureDose here and be sure to link it to your Outside+ account so you can participate in fun challenges and win prizes for getting outside.

In the meantime make the sauce for the tacos. This is Danny's special "funk sauce". Funk Sauce is the perfect blend of salty flavors with a little bit of smoke from the adobo. Put it on everything. Mix together all the ingredients and save for later.

Loosely based, you can find them anywhere! From festival stages to panhandling on the corner, the only constant is smiles, and irreverence for the jurisprudence of our time, regardless of what jurisprudence means.

I (Poppa Phat Smile, Band leader, Bass/Guitar/Vocals) usually call everyone in the band and figure out where they are. Then Wishbone Jenkins (Lead OP-1 player and 1st Shaker) drives me around as I frantically make phone calls that may or may not have anything to do with the show. Everyone we pick up has their own ritual within our frantic group ritual:

Tractor, The Beam of Attraction does yoga in a very quiet and secluded place preferably with luscious ferns about (Note to reader, it is strongly encouraged he is not interrupted at this time for the sake of all parties involved).

Kiss me Bananas (Formerly known as Crispy Bananas) catches 5 Pokemon within 30 meters of the venue, following this he must joyously chill, always knowing his secret banana could be activated at any time!

Once all these activities have been performed we gather in a triangle and argue about ancient greek philosophers and whether the mentor system truly trumps the post-industrial revolutions public school system. This takes about 45 minutes and then we are ready to hit the stage!

My son set a couple goals over our holiday break. One of the big ones was that he wanted to learn to tie his shoes. So in true procrastination form, the night before we went back to school, I pulled up a youtube video and within minutes my little boy was happily tying his shoes! This is hot to teach a child to tie shoes with no stress or frustration.

Hi there. Sorry I know this post is a couple years old. But, how old do you recommend a child be before trying to teach them? Also, wondering if it would be better to tie the knot where the second loop would catch so they know when to stop pulling? Or is there a reason it is where it is?

Hey! No worries! I have since used this method with my youngest and my nephew and it has been quickly successful each time. We worked on it right before kindergarten for them and it was great. The knot is what they use to pull through and make the second bow. Gives them an easier place to grab that stands out.

We used the colored laces for about 3 months and then he was fine without them or the knot. My son literally learned in 3 minutes. I colored the laces, we practiced each step for a couple seconds and he was ready to go. Might be longer for some and he has very good fine motor skills, but I actually sat a timer and he was able to complete it in 3 minutes!

Now the party didnt start till I walked in

And I probably wont leave until the thing ends

But in the mean time, the in between time

If you work your thing, then I'll work mine

We came here together so we could have fun

Me and you baby, goin one on one

Now this is the last chance for us to get off

So either get loose, or you aught to get lost

Cause Im just about ready to do my thing

Cause Im the stone cold, New York, Rap Machine

Im 'a give you what I got, and baby thats plenty

You'll never have one that rocks so many

Im 'a make you wet and make you sweat

Just to see how funky you can get

Now when Im on the mic, I do serve well

And I go by the name of the Rapper Jalil

Now sit back, relax, put on your head gear

Get ready for a trip through the Atmosphere

Gonna take you for a ride through the Twighlight Zone

I dont need a space ship, I use my microphone

So hold on tight, with all your might

Cause Ill be rappin like this for the rest of the night

Its Jalil yall, your master rapper

And when Im on the mic its a sheer disaster

Cause MC's crumble when we rumble

Some think Im soft just because Im humble

So all you MC's, I hope you're real good listeners

Cause in this battle, Im takin no prisoners

Im slayin MC's right on the spot

Cause Im the the master of the Rap, the doctor of the Rock

The Jack of all Trades, The Master of One

And the thing Im at, is called havin fun

We got three minutes left to rock this funk

To separate the good stuff from the junk, so

Get in the groove, and feel the sound

And once you're inside, spread yourself around

From the bottom to the top, the top to the bottom

Come on Master Dee, get funky while we got em

Morris was born in Springfield, Illinois, but moved to Minneapolis when he was still young. His parents were divorced, and he had several step-dads and half-siblings. His older sister was the rock to him, and continued to help him out of trouble well into their adulthoods.

Eventually his loyalty paid off, and Prince wanted to make a Morris album. Morris had never been a lead singer, but Prince convinced him he could do it. They produced the whole album themselves, and then Prince revealed that he envisioned Morris with a band, not as a solo artist. So Morris dipped into his Minneapolis funk favorites to come up with band members for The Time (even though none of them actually played on that first album).

This is where we see the birth of MD, the more exaggerated version of Morris. The character from the movie became his onstage persona, and often blended into his real life. Over decades, Morris fought with drugs, alcohol, and women. He did get married, and had a family. He did have some successful albums, both with the band and as a solo artist. He feels he had an ongoing struggle between MD, who wanted all the fabulousness of being a celebrity, and Morris, who wanted a family and to just play good music.

Depression impacts almost every part of your life, interfering with how you think, feel, and go about your daily activities like sleeping, working, and socializing. Some common symptoms of depression include:

Although depression can become a very clinical subject, many of the ways to help yourself through this mood disorder are very simple and practical. Self-care is a key component to living a happy, healthy life and between your diet, exercise, daily routines, and social interactions there are plenty of steps you can take to influence your mood. As you move through your depression, be open to trying new approaches and understand that it might take a combination of these self-care practices before you notice a change in your mood.

Studies have shown that just doing 15 minutes of moderate exercise a day can significantly decrease symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression. This is because exercise helps to break down stress hormones like cortisol while releasing feel-good endorphins at the same time. However, not every activity needs to get your heart pumping and sweat running to be an effective tool against depression. Some other ways to exercise include:

Experts recommend getting at least thirty minutes of activity each day to help regulate your mood as well as improve your overall health and protect against other risks like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Another self-care aspect that is easy to overlook when all you want to do is sit on the couch is getting outside into the sunshine! Sunlight and darkness trigger different hormones in your brain and too much time spent inside can have a huge impact on your mood. Along with boosting your serotonin levels, spending some time outside can help increase Vitamin D production, lower your blood pressure, build stronger bones, and allow you to get more quality sleep.

Any level of depression should be taken seriously and the faster you address the symptoms, the less likely you are to develop a more severe type of depression. Seeking professional help is a sign of bravery and self-respect because it shows that you are dedicated to caring for your mind and body. A therapist can offer more clinical advice and guide you through treatment with approaches that are more tailored to your specific situation and needs. However, if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, tell someone you trust and seek assistance immediately.
