Face-to-face communication across language barriers, he and his colleagues determined, requires a technology that more closely resembles the universal translator concept popularized by Star Trek and other works of science fiction.
The consumer-facing translation site known as Bing Translator (previously known as Windows Live translator) was launched in 2007 and provides free text and website translations on the web. Text is translated directly within the Bing Translator webpage while websites are translated through the Bilingual Viewer tools.[citation needed]
Because machine translation is based on statistical algorithms rather than human translators, the automatic translations it produces are not always entirely accurate. Microsoft Translator has introduced various feedback features, such as the Collaborative Translation Framework, into its products to allow users to suggest alternative translations. These alternative translations are then integrated into the Microsoft Translator algorithms to improve future translations.
A personal universal translator that enables up to 500 people to have live, multi-device, multi-language, in person translated conversations.[15] This feature is currently free and available in the Microsoft Translator apps (Android, iOS or Windows) and from the browser at: translator.microsoft.com
The Tower of Babel Still Wins
Microsoft Translator can't yet replace a professional human interpreter or translator, but it can serve in a pinch when you need an on-the-spot foreign phrase, a quick text translation, or to know what a sign says. I would like to see more languages supported by the camera and voice functions, and a more-automatic mode of operation similar to that of Google Translate would be welcome. If you're a Windows Phone user, Google Translate isn't an option, but on the other platforms you may be better off with it, though it, too, has shortcomings. This is pretty new stuff, so don't expect a PCMag Editors' Choice just yet.
Both Google Translate and Microsoft Translator allow you to translate plain text, translate text in images, translate voice conversations, and translate documents. However, Google Translate also lets you translate handwriting and drawings. These two popular translators have their own advantages, and you can choose the one based on your preference.

The interface is simple and straightforward with some of the language databases available to download for offline use. Otherwise, a data connection is required. We have seen Microsoft Translator grow over the years from a basic translator app to a feature rich communications tool. It is a must-have app for anyone who needs translate foreign languages.
While you can access the translator capability via Microsoft Edge or a third-party browser, Windows 10 is still losing the best translation tool. Some people also used the Translator app on devices like the Surface Pro 7.
Focusing on the sizeable task of software and service localization, Phrase enables organizations to collaborate with translators in a simple, fast and transparent manner. The platform is powered by API-driven software that extracts language data from source code and makes it available for localization through an online editor.
Adjusting translations is aided by a useful search function that can identify all text resources containing a certain word for a quick fix in multiple areas, while proof reading features enable other translators on the platform to swiftly verify text if required.
Lokalize does what it says on the tin, localizing and translating mobile apps and web content for companies big and small. The service allows clients to upload localization files, then edit and translate their copy with either their own translators or Lokalise's professionals.
An MT automatically converts text into another language without the use of a human, while a CAT is software that helps a human translator complete their task. All professional translation agencies rely on CAT software these days, as a fundamental step in the translation process.
Most machine translators perform best in English to Spanish (LATAM), Portuguese (Brazil), French (European), and Chinese (Simplified). What tool works well for one language pair might not work at all for another language pair.
For example, Korean speakers often use Papago as their machine translator of choice because other MTs, like Google Translate, struggle to successfully convert Korean sentence structures or formality levels to English.
Put simply, no machine translation tool is as accurate or natural as a native professional translator. This is because, for marketing translation to really work, it needs to involve a level of transcreation, i.e. the creative translation of text.
At VeraContent, we know what it takes to ensure translations are not only accurate but also appropriate for each market. We draw upon our vast pool of vetted freelance translators to ensure each translation goes beyond the text.
