When the install is finished or when the server is run for the first time, a browser will launch and ask you to either sign in or create a new account on the plex.tv website. You will then be asked to accept the terms of service, and the Setup Wizard will start.
I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 install that uses Windows software RAID to mirror the drive. The primary drive is failing. I installed a new drive to the set and syncing is almost complete. Once the sync finishes, I want to promote the secondary plex to to the primary booting drive, break the set, and remove the failing drive from.
Mount the network paths on the NUC and have the new server point to them (and pray it works). No idea how to go about "importing" windows reg values, so it will basically result in a "new" server, meaning I have to re-add settings & shared users (what about family settings?! those took so long to set up)
I'm running a relatively beefy system (10900K @ 5.2Ghz, 2080Ti, 64GB RAM, and all SSDs). Playing a video is fine. Playing games are fine. The problem I am having with Plex isn't with its playability or anything like that (HW acceleration is enabled and whatnot); however, the UI seems laggy. Even moving the mouse cursor over the active plex window causes the mouse to flicker, but as soon as it's outside the Plex border it's normal again.
Note: IF there are problems with the service running before the task at boot up. I had problems on 1 reboot, but all the rest have been fine. But still try the advice here: -order-on-windows-services-vs-scheduled-tasks
Regards performance I can't compare to Ubuntu. Compared to local drives, guess two scenarios (keep in mind I have a local NAS and the gdrive presented to plex via a union)
1)File is on the local disk: no noticeable performance drop.
2) file in on gdrive: there is a tiny bit of lag. It's noticeable (to me, I suspect my wife and kids are oblivious) but we're talking a second to buffer. Search (fast forward) through a film and it's a little more telling. But it's still a very solid user experience.
All my material is in 720 or 1080. For 4k your milage might very. But, I've tested with 4k, high bit rate files, and it's worked fine.
I used my plex app for windows on a fourth monitor (TV) that I plug and unplug frequently. I unplugged it leaving the plex app opened on it. Usually, the program would just switch to an active display, but it didn't. I tried the "shit" + windows key + arrows to switch windows form one display to another. I figured if I plugged the TV back on, it would just kind of figure itself out. It didn't.
Has anyone else had ongoing issues with the Plex for windows desktop app (not the Plex HTPC app), when it comes to app performance? Some examples of what I'm talking about is weird refresh rate issues when the app is in focus.
The app is still usable, but with my hardware, there is no reason for this to be happening. Also, this does not happen at all when using plex in the browser, only with the Windows Desktop App. Does anyone else have these kind of issues with the app?
Notes about hardware, I am running the plex server on a different computer, Ubuntu 20 server, while my computer is Windows 10, 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12600KF 3.70 GHz, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA 3080 TI GPU. I have been having this issue for years now, even after recently upgrading hardware, and wiping Windows.
So now my Plex media server boots straight into the desktop (UEFI turns pc on at 6am) without needing me to enter a password. After 1 minute up time (when exactly does windows start counting this from?) - Screensaver kicks in. Then, exiting screensaver requires a password!
The crux of the question really seems to be driving at how to ensure the Plex Server is running in the background even when a Plex Server owner user is not logged into the Windows machine (Example: After a Windows Update automatic reboot). The best way to do this is to run the Plex Server as a Service and assign the service to a system account (standard user account not normally used by a human). The following link is a guide to running the Plex Server as a Windows service: -media-server/windows/running-plex-media-server-service/
Building a plex server with 36tb of storage with nvidia p5000 gpu 12600kf cpu. This system will run 24/7 doing its only job. Plex server for a home network. I will be removing everything from the software i can to slim the os down in windows 11 pro. What os would be better for these parts and 24/7 operation? windows 11 pro vs windows server 2022
Is remote desktop easy to use on server 2022 using windows 10 vs 11 pro to login and update? Right now i have my friends house all setup with unifi for everything and its nice to be able to login remote and update and fix problems fast. If that worked with this plex server that would be nice.
Years ago XP used to suck as a server. Today though there's little difference between the OSs other than services you will never use. If anything desktop windows is easier when dealing with non Microsoft software.
Does anybody know if this is a viable option? I was thinking about setting up a plex server on my main windows machine. It's on and connected to the Internet 24/7 but some of that time other users might be logged in to their account. Would this cause an issue?
I have a Plex server in my home. Started watching Plex through my browser, but codec support wasn't good so lots of media needed conversion - but I want directplay, so I switched to the windows apps.
I have run it in windows on a dedicated box, as a plug-in in v5 and now as a docker in 6. Docker blows them all away as far as maintenance goes. All I have to worry about is restarting the docker when a new version comes out and presto chango its back up and running no fuss no muss. Keeping it in a docker is the bee's knees. I highly recommend it *especially* if your running an entire Windows install just to support it (and all the upkeep that entails). I am just saying I don't know how to make that type of transition nor even if its possible (I just started over each time as it was just me at the time). But if it were me, I would at least bring it up with the experts on Plex forums. Maybe its not as complicated as I imagine?
When I moved my plex install from an ubuntu VM to a docker, almost everything transferred and it was seamless. The only thing that stopped working was the auto camera upload. I had to clear out the pictures database and start over.
But then again, that whole camera upload thing is really finicky in plex. The slightest change and plex thinks it's a new mobile device, reuploads everything and duplicates all the pictures. I ended getting fed up and deleted the whole thing. Google's photos app is smarter, it automatically detects and prevents duplicate picture uploads when I switch roms on android devices.
i have a similar situation. im running everything on and old Xeon serve with Windows server 2016. Im trying to move over to unraid on an old gaming rig, 8700k and a 1070 which will handle everything much better. windows server is staying on current server for automated centralised backups and bare metal restore function.
i could run everything in a VM on unraid because my Blue iris (cctv) setup needs a windows environment anyway. or i could run blue iris on the vm and plex in a docker or option 3 is i run windows to for plex and blue iris and have a separate (3rd) server just for unraid and use that for centralised media storage.
i have asked about the advantage and i was told that errors that occur in a docker stay contained as they are their own environment but im not sure thats a good enough reason because ive had no issues running plex inside windows for years.
Hi, I have a problem where the Plex server in my My Cloud Home loses all metadata from time to time. It looks this is a documented problem that happens often. I notice however that the Plex server makes a backup copy of the library metadata in the following folder:
/data/user/0/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases
Callers can specify hints by passing in the pHints parameter to the IVdsSubSystem::CreateLun method when creating a LUN, or by using the IVdsLunPlex::ApplyHints method to apply a set of new hints to an existing plex.
First, the reason I'm looking to launch the Windows 10 Plex APP is that it has controller support, while the browser version does not. So I downloaded the app. Took control of Windowsapps folder in Program Files, found the Plex App exe, but apparently when clicking the exe for windows apps, you get an error:
