We're going to meet again at Exeter this sunday, 6pm as usual. This
time we'll be inventing frameworks that can explain everything and
then using them to, well, explain everything! Not really though, the
point is actually to notice ideas that we aren't using to constrain
our expectations. So for example, last week we talked about how one
might (mis-)use evolutionary psychology ideas to explain nearly any
behaviour by telling a story about it being adaptive somehow in our
ancestral environment. Another example we talked about was signalling,
which could also be (mis-)applied to most any behaviour. These ideas
are not wrong, but applying them uncritically to everything is.
So let's invent more wrong ideas and apply them to everything! Bring
your best explain-everything framework and explain the world away...
bonus points if yours can explain the specifics of this email :)
