Dear Peeps

Just a reminder that Oxford Hackspace is contributing an event to the OIWF (Oxford International Women’s Festival) this year. We will be open to visitors on Thursday 10 March from 2-7:00 pm and hope to show them a range of activities as well as offering a tour of the space.

Currently we have 3 definite commitments (covering ham radio, 3D printing and shoemaking) but we need quite a few more, as we need to be able to offer interesting activities over a 5-hour period. A number of Hackspace and other people were approached last autumn but are now unable to take part due to pressure of work, double-booking  etc. I currently have feelers out to several other bods, but am only mildly optimistic and,  importantly, none of them are members of the Hackspace!!

So, Hackspace peeps, if you can, please volunteer to do demos (or even maybe show relevant videos??), topics of your own choice but possibilities would include arduinos/Raspberry Pi/ robotics, maybe even some basic coding if it can be presented as fun. This event will be open to both men and women. The aim is not only to showcase the Hackspace but also to encourage women to be more interested in what we have to offer, especially some of the more technical things that they/we tend to shy away from.

I will be putting more info up on the wiki in a few days’ time. You can either contact me direct or via this Google group.
The OIWF festival programme should be published later this week, and I’ll bring a few copies down as soon as I receive them. In the meantime I’m attaching the final proof.
We’ll also, additionally,  need to start thinking about creating our own flyers/posters etc. to make us stand out from the other 30 or so events taking place during the Festival.

Best wishes
Eileen

Hi Eileen

I make nappies/wraps for Cherished Gowns http://www.cherishedgowns.org.uk/ and would be happy to do a demo if a sewing machine could be set up - I could only do from 5pm because of work though, would that be ok?

Jo

Dear Jo

A demo using one of our sewing machines would be fine – thanks very much for the offer. I believe some of the Hackspace chaps would also like to learn how to use one! I think Lauren is the expert on what machines we have and where they are stashed. If our visitors were interested, would you also be able to show them how to use one themselves? Not wrecking your own fine work of course – but I think we can rustle up some spare material from a bag somewhere in the Hackspace. And from 5:00 pm would also be just fine.

Many thanks
Eileen

Absolutely up for teaching!  I will need help setting up, but Lauren, if you could tell me where they are so I can tell whoever's about that would be great!

I could do a basic coding using one of the Software Carpentry novice Python lessons.

This sounds excellent Jane. I might even join in as a student!! I was thinking that eventually I ought to learn a bit of Python......
I have also been very keen to include coding in our event, and/or arduinos etc., not least because of the title of our event in the official Festival programme:

Women, can you hack it??
Of course you can!! Come and try a variety of free workshops and demos at
our splendid new premises. These may range from 3D printing to robotics or
textiles. Or just drop in for tea and a chat, see what a hackspace can offer you
and your family. http://oxhack.org/ Just drop in – no need to book.
Many thanks
Eileen
