Hello,

I know one major component of obtaining of being a graduate student
in the sciences in the US is being a TA of some sort. I was wondering,
since the UK does not have such appointments is one at a disadvantage
if they are to apply to post-doc positions/ assistant professor
appointments upon completion of the degree?

Hello,

I don't know whether you would be at a big disadvantage if you do not have this experience. It seems like our graduates don't have a problem getting [very good] postdoc positions, but I'm not sure about the impact on faculty positions.

However, there are actually opportunities at the NIH and Oxford (and Cambridge too, I assume?) to teach courses to undergraduates. If this is something important to you, then you would be able to get the experience.

Perhaps someone who has done this could comment - I haven't done any teaching.

-Cynthia
