Hello All,

I am approaching graduation next May 2012 with my undergraduate
degree
in Microbiology. I have been active in research and working in a lab
since I was a sophomore and am really interested in this program.
Has
anyone applied that has a family? I am an older student returning to
school. I was in engineering and was not really happy in that field.
Now I found my place, but will only be able to apply if my family
will
be able to go with me. I know some of these programs offer
assistance
for living for the student, but what about the rest of me. Thank you
for
any information!

It appears no one has applied to the program before that has a family.
Or at least is willing to talk about it :-)

Many colleges at Oxford and Cambridge have couples housing. That, or
you can just get housing on the economy, like in the US. Your NIH
stipend wouldn't be adjusted for having children/dependents. Airfare
for family members to get between the US and UK is typically not
covered.

Hi Ryan,

I know that there are a few students in the program who currently have
children, who had children while in the program, and whose partners
have moved overseas with them. However, I personally do not have
experience with this. Perhaps those students are not active on this
group, and that is why you have not gotten a response.

For details on the NIH program look here:
https://www.training.nih.gov/programs/gpp
We are usually in the IRTA Pre-doctoral Fellow category. Some
information about family health insurance is here-
http://oma.od.nih.gov/manualchapters/person/2300-320-7/

I would encourage you to speak in person to some of the program staff
about your specific concerns, as they can advise you accurately.
Additionally, they may be able to put you in touch with students who
have similar situations, or at least tell you about how those students
have balanced their family life with their PhD work.

Best wishes,

Cynthia

Hi Ryan,

Sorry for the delay—I haven’t checked this forum in a long time.  I came to Oxford with a wife and 1yr old baby.  We had to rely on a lot of personal savings in the first year—probably around $10,000 to pay for airfare, residence permits for the family, etc etc.  We tend to eat out a lot and took a couple of trips, so you could probably do it for half that, but I don’t think it would be possible on stipend alone, and you definitely need some up-front cash.  Your wife will be able to work with her VISA status (Tier 4 dependent), but there could be other certification hurdles if she’s a doctor or nurse, etc.  Several colleges have nurseries that are cheaper, but still expensive (~ $1000/mo full time).  We do two half days of daycare and stagger our work schedules to save money (~ $300/mo).  We live in a 2br flat near the lab (not in college), for about $1350/mo, plus ~ $200/mo for gas, water, internet, electric.  Living in college didn’t save much, and was way less convenient to the lab.  There are lots of nice parks in Oxford, and tons of young families.  We live in Headington and there are convenient play-centers, music groups, etc for kids.  We don’t have a car, but rent one sometimes for trips.
