Hello Christopher,

I've tried to download and run the latest version, with no success.

I still get the old V 4.3. when I run OxCal Project.

New models do not run.

I do not get IntCal20 offered as a curve when calibrating.

I've tried several downloads of the zip file without success.

Any suggestions?

Best wishes

Ray

Ok - a few questions:

1. Are you running nodejs ok - as detailed in:

https://c14.arch.ox.ac.uk/oxcalhelp/readme.html#local

2. When you look at the interface on:

http://localhost:8080/

does OxCal look like the server version (v4.4, IntCal20 references etc).

3. What type of computer do you have (Mac, Windows (which version) or Linux)

4. If you navigate to the binary directory (using the command line) and try running the relevant binary directly, does that run or do you get any error messages.

The NodeServer should be pretty much unchanged from previous versions. If anyone has had success with running the new downloaded version on Windows/Linux, it would be useful to feed that back.

Best wishes

Christopher

I had the same problem - eventually solved it by deleting browser history and cache (I use Google Chrome in Windows 10 to run the downloaded version of OxCal). There are still some file-handling glitches I haven't figured out.

To get 4.4 to run I had to first clear the browser cache.

Thanks Christopher,

1. I am running nodejs (and was prior to the new install)

2. It goes  immediately to :http://localhost:8080/oxcal/OxCal.html.  It has the OxCal page for 4.3 nterface build: 109 Updated: 16/4/2018
(c) Christopher Bronk Ramsey 2018

3.  Windows 7.

4. Running OxCalWin.exe via the bin  I get a cmd window that says:

OxCal v4.4.1 <c> Bronk Ramsey<2020>
OxCal v4.4.1 Bronk Ramsey <2020>;  r:5

Ok - that sounds hopeful because the binary seems to work anyway. As suggested by others you might need to clear the cache on your browser. Also make sure you stop and restart the node server. You might also check that if you go to:

http://localhost:8080/setup.html

that the settings are ok - because these may have been overwritten.

Hi Christopher, John,

I've just cleared the cache (Opera v70).

That seems to have got things going again.  I'll need to check the reset since I reset previously to try to deduce the problem.

dear Christopher,
earlier I mentioned a glitch with file-handling, but it's not that. Using the downloaded Windows version, models don't seem to run at all if some Options are specified (e.g. Resolution=1), even if the identical model code runs perfectly online. So far, selecting anything other than the default Options for Cubic, RawData and Resolution appears to stop the model running, whereas Floruit and BCAD are okay. Perhaps other users can check if they have this issue on other platforms.
many thanks
John

Ok - looking at some online discussion, I think this will probably be to do with the Windows compilation. This was compiled on Windows 7; I cannot check from here but is probably 32-bit which puts some limits on array sizes. I will try next week to recompile it under Windows-10 and see if that solves the problem. The only issue with that is that it may no longer run on 32-bit Windows 7 systems.

Best wishes

Hi  Christopher,

Choosing Tools Options Resolution or some, but not all, of the other options leads to a no run.

Deleting the chosen options (but leaving the Options line) leads to a no run.

Trying to delete the button below Options leads to a RUN though the button is not deleted.

Tools Options with defaults leads to a RUN

Windows 7 64 bit

Opera 70

AFter downloading the new version to on my new Windows 10 system (so a totaly clean install of OxCal as no previous versions where on it), I find that OxCal will not display any graphs in either Firefox or Chrome, for any of the calibration curves.  By this I mean if I enter a radiocarbon age to calibrate, using the quick calibration option, and hit the calibrate button, it does not display the plot of the calibration, nor display any results.  I also find that it will not plot the calibration curve if I click on the View Curve button.

I have tried using Versions 10, 12, and 14 of Node.js, incase it was something to do with that, but the results did not vary.

If it is not running at all this could be a permissions issue. Make sure that the directories in the setup are writable by the user specified by nodejs.

However, there seem to be some issues with the windows version more generally so it is probably worth waiting for these to be resolved.

Hello,

it seems quite tricky I must admit. When I had installed it and followed the setup info, it worked, but re-starting it the next day I afaced some problems. When starting node with the suggested command it just jumped to an empty line and Oxcal did not start. The localhost could not be connected and after reading the comments here I managed to get it working after erasing the browser and starting everything, including PC anew.
Then I imported some data (9 dates) and wanted a calibration. Not being a native speaker I lack the words to describe it but it seemed as if the program got stuck, no buttons to click, so I clicked the reload button and was back to the start page. The funny thing is, the model obviously had run as I could open the file with all the data.
Another , but tiny, problem is that when you want to save the single plots it always jumps to the Oxcal directory and does not stay in the subdirectory as in earlier versions. Took me a while (as it might be too early still) to notice.
I thought I just gve you notice in case you need to change things....

For those who would like to install OxCal locally using Nodejs here is a
minimalistic command-script (for MS Windows) that starts OxCal and
opens it in your favorite browser.

- install nodejs and OxCal
- have the path to your OxCal installation ready
- start "notepad" (or any other text editor) and create a new document.
- Paste in the following text into the document:

:: set path to your OxCal installation folder here
set path=C:\Programs\OxCal
::
cd %path%
node NodeServer.js

- change the path to your OxCal installation folder as needed
- save document as "start-oxcal.cmd"

Now you can double click on that command script in order to start OxCal.

Dear Christopher,

using IntCal20 works fine so far.
However, when switching the curve to IntCal13 nothing happens.
Switching back to IntCal20 doesn't show any results either. As if something has crashed.
One needs to reload the webpage in order to calibrate again.

HOW TO REPRODUCE:
- run command: node NodeServer.js
- dsiplay oxcal via localhost:1950 (we are running it on port 1950 instead 8080 )
- enter date and uncertianty to be calibrated
- push "Calibrate" button
--> results in a calibration graph
- change "Curve" to IntCal13
- push "Calibrate" button
--> nothing happens
- change "Curve" to IntCal20
- push "Calibrate" button
--> nothing happens

Is anyone else experiencing this, and is this something I can ignore?

I'm using the web-based version, and any time I upload and then open a new .oxcal file, I get the following error:

Could not read output...
(SyntaxError: Unexpected identifier 'does')
Try again?

Clicking OK doesn't solve the problem, but after clicking Cancel, OxCal doesn't complain anymore, and everything seems to run fine.

If I've already run the code once and generated a .js file, I don't get this error.

This seems to be browser-independent (same problem on Safari 13.0.5 and Chrome 85.0.4183.69).

This also seems to be independent of which curve is invoked (same problem with Marine13.14c as with Marine20.14c as with neither, even on files that were copied but unchanged since they worked fine on previous versions of OxCal a few months ago).

I've cleared my cache on both browsers, so that's not it either....

Thanks,
Aron

Dear all

Ok - I have tried to deal with all the issues reported so far. Whether using online or on your own computer you will need to clear your browser cache to deal with some of the issues.

The new compiled version (except for linux) is 4.4.2 now. There are no significant changes to the code - but it should now run in the downloadable version for Windows with different resolutions and curves. It has been compiled in Windows10 and tested under that too, rather than Windows7.

The issue with forgetting directories, and problems with opening a .oxcal file without an output file should now be sorted.

For users of Windows systems, I have also included a batch file which you might find useful. This is in the parent OxCal directory and is set up assuming that you have put this in the "C:\Program Files" directory - otherwise edit this. To run the batch file right mouse click on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Alternatively if you use OxCal a lot you may want this to start up automatically. On Windows this can be most easily achieved using "Task scheduler" under "Windows Administrative Tools":

. Create basic task
. Give it a name (like 'OxCal server') and a description
. Trigger it "When you log on"
. Action - selet "Start a program"
. For the program put "node", for the argument put "NodeServer.js" and for the 'Start in' directory put "C:\Program files\OxCal
. On the final page, select the "Open the properties dialog" box
. For the properties, select it to only run when logged in and, importantly to "Run with highest privileges"

Then log out and back in again. You should find that the node server starts whenever you log on and you can then use OxCal from the browser at all times. There may be variations on this which are useful - but I hope that gets people started.

The only version I have not tested is the Linux version which is still v4.4.1 for the moment. If anyone uses this please let me know. My version of linux is now very old and if this is still needed I had better upgrade to a newer version to compile the binary.

Best wishes

Christopher

Aloha Christopher,

Yes, I use the linux binary on a current Ubuntu-based
distribution. I'm working on some legacy projects at the moment
and don't expect to upgrade before they are completed in a month
or two.

Many thanks for maintaining a linux binary!

All the best,
Tom

I have recompiled the Linux version too and tested it on the latest Ubuntu - so all versions are now 4.4.2. It looks as if the previous version also worked - but the latest version is compiled with all the latest tools and should be 64 bit.

Hello Christopher,

I have tried to install the 4.4.2 version, but am having problems.

I'm on Windows 7, 64 bit. Opera browser. node.js

I have cleared the browser cache.  I have downloaded again twice.

The problems so far are:

1. I cannot calibrate single dates.  All I get is a curve (it shows version 4.4.1 at the top) with no distribution plot.
2. If I try to calibrate multiple dates, then when I press RUN I get 'local host 8080'  404 not found.  At that point I can't get back unless I do a reload
3. If I try to create a new model, I get the 'local host 8080'  404 file not found.
4. I can load previous models.

Best wishes

Ray

I have been testing now on Windows 10. It sounds as if OxCal is not running and the curve is probably just from the previous version. It sounds as if the NodeServer is running ok - just not the executable.

Does the new version actually run in Windows7 - to check for this you could set you environment variable to include C:/Program Files/OxCal/bin and then navigate to your working directory and type OxCalWin.exe - it should run and report the version as 4.4.2.

You can also just click on OxCalWin.exe - it might ask a few questions - but it should run. It is possible that the new version compiled under Windows10 does not work on Windows7 - someone else may be able to confirm this. I no longer have Windows7 to test this on as it is not supported here.

Best wishes

Hi Christopher,

That seems to work, Single calibrations get a distribution and the curves view now has the posterior shown.

When I run a new model with some dates, it gives the '404 file not found' message and locks - then I do a reset from right click on the screen and run again, it runs the model.

regards

Ray

Ok - if you clear your browser cache the '404 file not found' should be fixed - I dealt with that on the last update: it only applied with new models and so had not been found in earlier testing.

Good morning,
I also tried the nex version on Windows 10 and now nothing seems to work. As soon as I try to get some data (importing several samples) I get the 404 error. When I try a single date I get a complete nonsense age of something I didn´t type it. I´ll try with the previous version, as this at least was running (have to write urgent reports today). I include a screenshot of the single date.

For my part, I am pleased to report that earlier problems seem to have been resolved by the most recent downloadable version (running in Windows 10, Chrome,...). This is build 129. I see from Susanne's screenshot that she still has build 125 running.
best wishes
John

Hi John,

I, too see built 125 and re-installed (including new download and deleting the old oxcal) the new package. It still says built 125 from 12-08-2020, but suddenly I can at least import a file and get a table. But when opening a new tab I cannot calibrate a single date. Maybe I´m doing something wrong....

Thanks for checking and best wishes
Susanne

Susanna et al.

You probably just need to clear the cache then - as the downloadable user interface build is now at 129.

The same goes for the online version - clearing the cache is required to make the user interface update.

When people are happy that the downloaded version seems to be working I will make another announcement about v4.4.2 and explain that the cache should be emptied. Please let me know any other critical issues remaining today and I will try to get those fixed before doing that.

Best wishes

Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Running on laptop W7, 32 bit, Opera.

I get the Web interface build 129, but new models don't run, local host 8080 says 404 file not found.
Single calibration plot says OxCal v 4.4.1 on the top.
regards

Ray

Hi Chris,

no it´s not a cache problem. I´ve emptied it everytime I used the browser to be on the safe side....

Can you check two of the files in the OxCal application directory:

..\fs\header.js should start: header={"version":71
..\oxcal\header.js should start: header={"version":129

if either of these is out of date try downloading again as the fs subdirectory may have been updated after your last download.

If they are in date then it is possible to check in the browser if these are reading correctly by looking in developer tools. A simpler approach might be to use another browser that you have not tried before; sometimes the browsers don't really clear the cache even when you ask them to.

I have tested it on Opera under windows 10 and that seems to work fine.

Best wishes

Hello Christopher,

These two file headers give the correct start information.

I notice also that a single calibration gives the version 4.4.1 plot.  Also clicking on the 'view curve' still remains on the 4.4.1 plot. i.e no curve.

On the OxCal Project page using Developer tools, I get an error (cross on red circle) which says 'Failed to load resource: the server responsible with a :8080/favicon.ico:1 status of 404 (not found)

I don't have an alternative browser at the moment.

Hi Chris,

for my PC you were right, it was the cache and (being a bit out of the hardware) I mixed it up with the browser chronic. So I googled empty cache and since then I have version 129 and it works. I also liked how you changed the plots. It is now easier to adjust centre and range. But it would be even better if also the y-axis (C14 age) would be adjustable as I often try to get the number separated from the graph which is sometimes challenging. I add a figure to make clear what I´m aiming at. Sorry, to hot to get my brain working today and trying to explain it as a non-native speaker :-D
Is it possible that with the arrows left and right you can change the x-axis and with up and down the y-axis? Now it seems that the calibration calibration curve is travelling diagonally therough the picture when useing left and right arrows (up and down jumps to a different sample of the series).

Best wishes
Susanne

Ok - I attach a copy of favicon.ico which you can put in the OxCal parent directory - that should solve that error message (though this is not required for functioning).  I will include it in future distributions.

Is anything else running for you - as you said it was working at one point?  You might try deleting the Quick.* files from your working directory - these sound as if they are left over from a previous version.  When you try doing a single calibration a new file should be overwritten here.  If when you try to run you get an Quick.oxcal file but no output files try typing:

& 'C:\Program Files\OxCal\bin\OxCalWin.exe' Quick.oxcal

into the command line with your oxcal working directory as the current directory, you should see the output:

OxCal v4.4.2 (c) Bronk Ramsey (2020)

and Quick.js, Quick.log and Quick.txt should all be created or refreshed.

If not it may be clear what the issue is.

Best wishes

Christopher

Hi Christopher,

On my desktop PC W7, 64 bit, Opera, all is well.

On my laptop, W7, 32 bit, Opera I have the problems.  I have now tried on Chrome with the same results.

Now having put favicon.ico in the OxCal parent directory and deleting Quick I can no longer do a single date calibrate.  Running a new model I get an 'Initializing' and immediately a 'quitting' then a return to the 'OxCal 4.4 Manual' window.

Ok - I see - there are two machines. The compilation is 64-bit and with a 64-bit library so I expect it cannot run on a 32-bit machine. You can see what happens if you run OxCalWin from the command line on the laptop, that may give some clues.

Best wishes

Hi Christopher,

On the 32 bit laptop

If I run OxCal/bin/OxCalWin I get this message:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running.  Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86(32bit) or x64(64bit) version of the program and contact the software publisher.

Ok - well that confirms the problem. Looking into it, the compiler/linker can only generate single use executables - and I have used x64(64bit) as the current normal one. The original v4.4.1 was compiled on an old 32bit Windows 7 virtual machine but support for that was no longer available and so I upgraded to Window10, 64 bit which is what v4.4.2 is compiled under. I'm afraid that leaves no support for old 32-bit machines anymore - but I think support for 32 bit operating Windows is also ending this year.

v4.4.1 is available at:

https://c14.arch.ox.ac.uk/oxcal.html#old

and should run on 32 bit (Windows) computers but it has a bug on Windows which prevents it from running files with an Option block. I would also only use the OxCalWin.exe from that as the user interface has now had a number of issues ironed out on the downloaded version.

Best wishes
