As a relatively new user to OxCal who can clearly see the capabilities of the software, I am finding a frustratingly steep learning curve with regard to correctly coding the interface to ask simple but specific questions. Are there any beginner-level references/tutorials that anyone can point me towards that explain the nuts and bolts of using simple commands like Phase(), Sequence(), Order(), Span(), etc, as well as their correct applications? Most examples I have found thus far also throw in modifiers that only seem to obfuscate what I really want to learn, and I don't consider the addition of such modifiers as particularly useful for the beginner level user. Any help would be appreciated (and will probably save me some money for replacing broken keyboards, mice, etc.). Thanks in advance!

You may find the notes for a session I delivered in Birmingham of use:

https://birmingham.instructure.com/courses/11615/pages/session-4-model-building-in-oxcal

The lecture was for people with quantitative skills who wanted to explore different uses of Bayesian statistics, but the handout is essentially what I use with our archaeology masters students.

Best wishes

Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for sharing the notes. This will help when I teach people how to
use OxCal in my geology courses. It is always good to have several ways
to inform people of new things.

Is it possible to get access to the video? The link you provided seems
to have a password protection. It would be nice if all the videos from
that series were to be available to the public.

thanks in advance,

Jay

Jay,

I don't know about accessing the video. You will have to contact the people at Birmingham who run the site. I was just a guest lecturer.
