For those who may have missed it, OUBs would like to share with you the details of our upcoming Graduate Conference, taking place just a week from now!
Entitled “Byzantium and its environment” the conference will run from the 1st-2nd March here in Oxford, as well as online via Zoom. The conference will look at the Late Antique and Byzantine period through an environmental lens.

Translation and Transmission of Arabo-Byzantine Texts - International Conference (Rome, 13-15 March 2025 - École française de Rome)
The École française de Rome invites you to the conference “Translation and Transmission of Arabo-Byzantine Texts,” which will be held in Rome at the École française de Rome, Piazza Navona 62, from March 13 to 15, 2025.
The conference is organized by Luca Farina (École française de Rome), Joe Glynias (Harvard University), and Johannes Pahlitzsch (Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz) and is held under the auspices of the Associazione Italiana di Studi Bizantini and the Comité français des études byzantines.
This event has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the École française de Rome, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard University, the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, and the Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom.

3rd Online Athens-Edinburgh Byzantine Book Festival
The Department of History and Philosophy of Science (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and the Centre for Late Antique, Islamic and Byzantine Studies (University of Edinburgh) warmly invites you to contribute and participate in the 3rd Online Athens-Edinburgh Byzantine Book Festival.
The Athens-Edinburgh Byzantine Book Festival is a unique opportunity to learn about recently published books on any area of Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (AD ca.300–ca.1500), including literature, history, archaeology, and material culture. The Festival is an online event, allowing attendees from all over the world to join in. It takes place every two years in order to promote a wider understanding and awareness of Byzantine scholarship in a spirit of collegiality. It is also intended to encourage future collaborations and networking among the various presenters and attendees.
The 3rd Online Athens-Edinburgh Byzantine Book Festival includes volumes published in 2023 and 2024, and forthcoming books with an estimated publication date no later than June 2025. There is no restriction as regards the original language of the book, but all presentations will be in English.
If you are an author of a monograph (including editions, commentaries, and translations of primary sources), on Late Antique and Byzantine studies, please complete the submission form (below - Word) and send it in Word version along with an image of the book’s cover to byzantineb...@hotmail.com by 6 April 2025. The practical guidelines of the Festival are available below (PDF). Please note that edited volumes, volumes that include a collection of previously published articles (e.g. variorum), reprints, re-editions or new paperback editions are not accepted. Each author can present up to one book.

2. JOBS AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Four-year, fully funded PhD positions, Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa
The Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, encourages applications to its PhD programme. Eighteen 4-year, fully funded places are available starting from November 1, 2025 in Classics (6), History (6) and History of Art (6) . They are open to candidates of any nationality who have been awarded their Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject by a recognised institution of higher education in any country no more than five years before April 17, 2025, and before October 31, 2025.
One PhD position is reserved for applicants who have obtained their Master's degree at a non-Italian university.
Starting date for applications: March 10, 2025
Deadline for applications (online only: registration is required): 23:59 (CET), April 17, 2025.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed held on or after May 27, 2024. Final results will be announced on or before June 30, 2024.
Bursary amount: euros 18,000 per annum (gross), inclusive of a housing allowance. All meals are offered free of charge in the Scuola’s canteen except during academic holidays. In addition to the scholarship, the Scuola contributes to the expenses incurred for formally authorized study and research activities in Italy and abroad.
Successful candidates are required to acquire a good working knowledge of Italian by the end of the second year of the programme. Language courses are offered at no charge.
Starting date of the programme: November 1, 2025.
Selection procedure:
- evaluation of: CV, research proposal, MA thesis or writing sample from the thesis, publications (if any)
- shortlisted candidates are invited to an interview (in Italian or English); candidates who reside abroad will be interviewed online
