Here is a link to the digital Sanborn Fire Maps that I mentioned at last night’s meeting.  This collection includes nine sets of maps representing downtown Owosso between 1884 and 1946.  They provide an excellent means to track development of the city over time.--Gary

Thanks for this... for me this leads to a login screen. Is there a way to access the maps?

Jim, if you click on the button for the state, Michigan will appear as the only option.  At the same time, a dropdown box will appear listing the cities in Michigan for which maps are available.  Select Owosso, after which another dropdown box will appear displaying the dates of the nine sets of maps.  When you click on a date, the set of maps will appear as thumbnails.  The sets include a master map, representing the entire area of the city surveyed by Sanborn at that time, and a series of detail maps, representing “close-ups” of individual sections of the master map.

Resolution of these online sets is not the best, but they are good enough for our current purposes.  Of course, if the city has actual hard copy sets, they will be more legible and easier to work with.--Gary

OK, but what password, etc. must I use to access this site?

Gary, do you have a Manual for Historic and Architectural Surveys In Michigan?? I have an extra copy and perhaps you should have it if you are putting together the final report.  Let me know --I can drop it off at your house.

Another matter---matresses are again on sale at Godwin's---a local business--- this week.  Are we going to take some action on this matter?

It may be that I am able to access the maps directly because I am affiliated with a particular library system.  Is no one else succeeding in getting to the maps?  If not, I’ll explore other means of making them available.--Gary
