Our thoughts are with the families impacted by the accident outside of our elementary school on Thursday. We are grateful to our school leadership for their quick response and for offering the emotional support our students and staff need at this time. We are hoping for a swift and full recovery for those who were injured. We are working with school administration to confirm how the PA can support the families and we hope to share more with you soon.

While we do not know all of the details surrounding Thursday’s incident, it has prompted us to focus on the serious safety issue we have on 35th Avenue. Many families have shared their concerns with us about regular speeding and hazardous driving between OWNCS, Frank Sinatra High School, and PS 166. The PA has reached out to our local elected officials to urge them to implement safety measures and we encourage you to do the same. If we are to effect change, they need to hear from as many of us as possible.

A list of our elected officials and their emails and phone numbers, as well as draft language you may use to email them, can be found below this message.

We are so fortunate to be a part of such a caring school community. We hope you’ll join us in advocating for the safety of our community by taking a few minutes to email or call our representatives. Please ask fellow OWNCS families and community members to do the same. If the PA can be supportive of you in any way, please email us at owncspto...@gmail.com.

With gratitude,
The Parent Association

Dear ,

I am writing to express my concern regarding a recent accident that occurred on April 3rd, 2025, outside Our World Neighborhood Charter School elementary school (OWNCS), injuring two children and one adult. This incident has highlighted a serious safety issue that demands urgent attention, especially considering the presence of three schools in this area. The safety of our children and community members should be a top priority, and I believe immediate steps must be taken to address this matter.

As a concerned community member—and most importantly, as a parent—I urge you to consider implementing measures that will enhance the safety of children, families, and pedestrians in the neighborhood surrounding OWNCS, Frank Sinatra High School, and P.S.166. Almost daily, the families at our school witness cars, delivery trucks, buses and City vehicles speeding through the red lights on 35th Avenue between these schools. With such a high concentration of schools in this area, traffic and pedestrian flow can be hazardous, and this recent accident underscores the need for improvements and safety enforcement.

In particular, I urge you to consider the installation of speed bumps or other traffic calming measures to reduce speeding in the area. An action like this would not only help prevent further accidents but also send a strong message that the safety of our children is of paramount importance. I am hopeful that you will prioritize this issue and advocate for the necessary changes to ensure a safer environment for everyone in our community.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to hearing from you and learning about the steps you plan to take to address this critical issue.

Regards,
