Tuesday night ride recap

There were 10 of us riding just south of the Rice/Steele County line tonight when 2 dogs attacked us.  We were about 1/2 way between the County line and Moland Church on County Road 10.  I was doing about 21 mph and chatting with Darin when the dogs came barreling out of the ditch.  The first dog ran right into Craig's bike and he went down.  The second dog's momentum carried him past Craig and the first dog only to be hit by Robb as Robb swerved to avoid Craig.  Robb also went down.  

Craig's elbow swelled immediately and Robb's left shoulder kind of drooped.  Margaret was our mini-van angel and came out to transport the wounded and their bikes.  In speaking with both Craig and Robb after their ER visit both are sore but doing well.  Craig came out the worst with some type of break in his elbow.  He will visit a bone specialist tomorrow for a cast.  Robb's shoulder was dislocated and x-rays are negative.  

Craig mentioned that a Sherrif's deputy came and took statements while they were at the hospital.  The first thing the deputy should notice when they stop to interview the dog's owners is the Dangerous Dogs sign they have in the front window of their house!

Thanks for the update Steve. I saw about the same from the back. I was directly behind and to the right of Craig and saw him go down. I would also add that the gentleman that provided ice was very apologetic. He talked about how the dogs were really good dogs and that they just wanted to play. Hope you guys heal up quick.

Hi all,
 
I fractured the Ulna bone just below the elbow, it appears to be a clean break. Funny, one the causes listed for this injury is a nightstick.

For what it's worth, it's true that the dogs were not "mean."  They didn't bite or even bare their teeth.  The just bounded up, collided with the bikes, yelped and ran away.

Hi All,
What a great group of people that helped us get settled at the site
and to the ER! My wife mentioned that Margaret was so nice and
accomodating when she dropped us off. It definitely could have worse,
separated shoulder and swollen fingers, so Tony, I can say I
understand better how you felt. Tuck and roll. This hurts worse than
the broken collar bone but doesn't require surgery so I will take
it.Doc says 4-6 weeks but I think it will depend more on how fast I
can get my bike fixed.
I can at least drink coffee on Saturdays so see you then....may God
help you keep the rubber down and the dogs out of your path!

Get well soon. Since some things got knocked out of place on Robb's
bike, passing the hat at men's night tonite towards a bike tune-up,
might be good idea............in lieu of flowers........guys aren't
into cards and flowers anyway.

As far as Craig......I'll keep buying stuff at shop, and let profits
put kids thru school...........


As far as the dogs. The owner's home is right on the road, closer
than would be legal for new construction. He does have a beware of
dog sign, but also, a 4 ft fence around his back yard, with the dog
house inside. In passing this house before, I've seen the dogs, but
always behind the fence. The lack of prior threat was a factor. This
guy was in front of his garage, shooting the breeze with a buddy,
letting the dogs roam in the driveway. Would you ever do that if you
lived in the country? In a world, where many people let their dogs
run free all day, to chase deer, cars and bikers, this guy is not the
enemy! Not in my book. I'm sure he is sweating bullets right now,
and maybe he should be. He appears to be a younger man, just starting
out. Hardly able to afford legal issues. That fence shows me he
takes some responsibility, and hopefully continues to show some.

Pat and I are dearly saddened by the report of another round of injuries with the involvement of dogs.
Certainly a riders worst fear.  Greater than vehicles, poor roads, or other cyclists combined.
We hope none of the reported injuries are serious enough to keep Robb and Craig off the bike for long.
Get well quick, Robb and Craig. We are thinking of you.
