Spotting/Period

I have a question about when to mark "Spotting" vs "Light Period".  Is it just a matter of volume? Or is spotting defined by being midcycle rather than at normal time of menses?  

I often have 2-3 days of pink before  a heavy flow starts. If I mark it as spotting, it adds to the last cycle, and if I mark it as light period, then it starts a new cycle, so I'm throwing off my Luteal phase by not knowing which it is.

you can decide how you want to mark it

and keep it always the same way
