The film released on 1 October 2010 and became the first Indian television series to be adapted into a film..[2] The film faced stiff competition from big-budget movies like Priyanka Chopra - Ranbir Kapoor starrer Anjaana Anjaani and dubbed Hindi version of Aishwarya Rai - Rajinikanth starrer Enthiran (Robot) and in the end its performance at the box office was termed hit.[4]

Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film 1 out of 5, writing, "Why did this ultra-loud, blindingly colour-coordinated bunch who did nothing of any consequence in the first movie, bother to circle back for a sequel?"[15] Deepa Gahlot of Rediff.com gave the film 2 out of 5, calling the production values as "shoddy" and the plot "incoherent."[6] Agnivo Niyogi of The Telegraph India criticised the screenplay and "focus on several subplots", writing, "Khichdi 2: Mission Paanthukistan struggles to create the kind of comedic moments that were the hallmark of the original TV serial."[4]

Why did this ultra-loud, blindingly colour-coordinated bunch who did nothing of any consequence in the first movie, bother to circle back for a sequel? In 2010, there may still have been space for a movie spin-off of a popular TV show, especially when it went off for seasonal breaks. But to do this now, when endless re-runs have made sure that Hansa Ben (Supriya Pathak) and her cohorts are never too far off from their fans? It makes no sense.

The sequel brings back memories of the popular TV show, but the antics are less amusing this time. There is some crisp humour here and there, but on the whole, the movie fails to deliver anything beyond its predictable format of senselessness.

I am sure this kind of a film has an audience, but they were sadly missing today from the hall. So, if the makers thought that the audiences were eagerly waiting to welcome the Parekh family back to the theaters, then I guess there was some miscalculation. Being one of those who hates to run down a film, I tried finding some positives about it. The only being, the performance and expressions of Supriya Pathak throughout the movie and to some extent the look of the film and the colourful cinematography.
