Hi Chris,

It's great that you're interested in Overtone and thanks for putting in effort to getting it working. I'm really sorry that it's harder than you or I would like. This is unfortunately the way things are at the moment - we've already gone a long way to making things easier to install, but clearly we still have a good way to go. Feedback like this is always super useful, and hopefully you can help us make it easier for the next person that comes along with a similar setup to yourself.

> I am not a unix guy and I am losing my mind trying to get working with Overtone. I can get things to make noise in a simple terminal, but I can't get setup with any kind of environment that is useful. Emacs seems to have a huge learning curve that I would like to avoid. I am a windows developer used to tools like visual studio.

You're right, Emacs does have a steep learning curve, which would be compounded by having to learn both Overtone and Clojure concurrently. Have you considered using Sketchpad?

There's also CounterClockwise, which I hear is an excellent tool and perhaps more suited to someone with a background with Visual Studio

> I have been wanting to toy with Overtone and Clojure for a while, but keep hitting brick walls after hours of work and never getting to where I am actually learning about things I want to learn about. I am not interested in live coding music so much, and want to build libraries and tools for music making.

Perhaps a good strategy here is to ask the mailing list how we might tackle the kinds of problems you're facing. We might be able to help you overcome the technical hurdles that are often very frustrating. Having had to learn all this stuff from scratch myself, I understand the pain!

> I almost got emacs live working, but just got so frustrated with it. I want to learn Clojure and Overtone, not emacs... It was looking like I was going to be spending too much time getting up to speed with emacs...

Check out the editors above :-) However, if you do decide to play with Emacs Live, then let me know what you mean by "almost got it working".

Awesome - send Jon some feedback, open some Github tickets and help him make it the editor you're looking for.

Sounds like a route of nightmares! You shouldn't need cygwin...

So let us know what you'd like to do, and we'll see if we can help you...

And once again, welcome to the Overtone community. It's lovely to have you here.

I have chosen the Eclipse path.  I am already up and running in a familiar environment.  I love you...

Thanks a lot for the very quick help.  It is greatly appreciated.

Great that you're happy with Eclipse/CCW, but FWIW another good option for people in your situation, particularly if they don't already have Eclipse experience, is Clooj (https://github.com/arthuredelstein/clooj).
