Brandon Rader and supporters of Watkins Overton High School forensics team,
Samford University, Alabama’s largest private university and home of a nationally competitive debate team would like to invite you and your students to two of our main functions for high school students. Samford will host its 37th annual debate institute this summer, and during September 2011 we will host the annual Bishop Guild Tournament which has again been recognized as a final round qualifier for policy debate for the Tournament of Champions.
Our debate institute is held on the Samford campus in Birmingham, Alabama, June 26th through July 9th. Our staff includes Dr. Ryan Galloway who was named the 3rd best debate critic of the 2000s by his colleagues. Billy Tate current president of the National Forensic League (NFL) again returns to instruct and oversee our dorms. Our staff also includes Samford’s NDT octa-finalist pair of Dan Bagwell Logan Gramzinski, their coaches including Abigail Williams, TOC octa-finalist and eighth speaker Lee Quinn and his coach Ross Garrett. In a recent study by Cross-x.com Samford’s camp was ranked one of the lowest cost camps in the country. Travel is easy since Birmingham has four major interstates and is Southwest Airlines’ hub for the southeastern United States. For more information see: http://www.samforddebateinstitute.com/
Starting next season the Bishop-Guild Tournament will be held September 23-25. The tournament has divisions for all three debate events (Policy, Public Forum, and Lincoln-Douglas), and many speech events as well. In the past students from Samford, Emory, Louisiana-Lafayette, University of Alabama, and West Georgia University have all helped judge, and this year Dr. Ryan Galloway will be made available for a full judging commitment. Free hospitality for all coaches is provided, and we are excited to incorporate ideas from the Healthy Debater Initiative so students can have high quality meals. We can provide assistance to any new programs or programs that have to fly to attend our tournament. Birmingham offers many educational activities such as its free Botanical Gardens and historic Civil Rights museum. Additionally there are many recreationally activities; one of the largest malls and restaurant areas in the southeastern United States is only a five minute drive from campus. The tournament invitation will be posted on Joyoftournaments.com when it is complete.
Sincerely,
Samford University Debate Team
