Hello, Debate Coaches,
I hope you had a great week. The attached article is a MUST read for each of us in Memphis Debate, especially our coaches and student debaters. This is a stunning success story that we are helping create in our Memphis community.
Here are a few updates:
- Debate coach stipends have been submitted to Student Support Services. I will follow-up next week to find out the timing of the payments to you. Thanks again for our successes this school year...the result of the hard work and creativity of you and our students.
- Our summer debate institute plans are shaping up. I really hope to see an increase in atteandance and look forward to seeing our current and new students attend.
- Note that lunch will be provided daily and we will pay for the first 80 students that register to visit the Memphis Pink Palace Museum Planetarium and Hubble IMAX film since our 2011-12 resolution is on space exploration. This an incentive to get those registrations to me ASAP!!
- I need you to submit your suppy orders to me ASAP. I plan to place these orders during the summer for delivery to your school just after school starts in August. This will help us "hit-the-ground-quickly" for next school year.
- Our year-end coaches meeting voted to use a rules committee to develop potential 2011-2012 MUDL rules changes.
- Our rules committe begins meeting next week and they will produce a list of potential rules changes for vote via Survey Monkey. Our representatives include Jamie Siebrase Hudgins (jaim...@gmail.com), Jan Martinez (jmartin...@yahoo.com), Davis Smith (smith...@mcsk12.net), Jordan Leveque (tigers...@gmail.com - new father of a future great debater, Kai Foster Leveque, who checked into a local hospital Tab Room at his birth this past Sunday at 6 lbs. and 9 oz.--he and his mother are doing fine
), and Brandon Rader (raderb...@gmail.com).
- Coaches in attendance or via e-mail and several of our student debaters who went to NYC for NAUDL national championships suggested rules changes that include the use of laptops/technology in rounds, spreading, open cross examination, widening the speaker scale for greater definition of speaker performance, requiring affirmative plans be published at least one-week prior to tournaments on a wiki website like done in other UDLs and debate leagues, debaters being able to stand next to the speaker during rounds to obtain evidence cards, clarifying MUDL policies on filing issues / disputes during debate tournaments to require inclusion of the league director, timeframes for holding evidence cards during rounds, and on who can be in a room during a debate round (note that our current rules state that anyone can be in a debate round if they are following rules for quiet and non-signaling and that any witnesses CAN flow and take notes during rounds--this is acceptable behavior). These changes will help our students become more competitive locally and nationally and will improve the management of our league.
- I have attached our MUDL reporting notebook and the guidelines from NAUDL for our 2010-2011 participation levels.
- Scholarship opportunities are attached and below and note that the University of Oklahoma charges $350 for a comparable debate camp that our MCS students receive for FREE.
I look forward to continuing our work together. Let me know how I can be of service. Have a great weekend.
These came to me from a MUDL Advisory Board Member
Be sure to look at the attachment as well as the scholarships listed below which have links. Of special note the Hallie Q. Brown and Dell Scholars are for high school juniors whose deadline is in January. If you have a student/child who is a h.s. freshmen or sophomore keep the info for future reference. Also, the Jacob K. Javits Teacher Schlarship sounds good(Jamila and Cicely, I thought about both of you). Also, the Coca Cola scholarhip early deadline in October (I think) and the Ron Brown sounds really for h.s. seniors. So, check those out as well as others that may be of interest. There is a wide variety.
The attachment has a great deal of scholarships particularly for ALL minorities. Please pass on.
The attachment contains many more scholarship opportunities...
…thanks from efamily member Clara Meek
