Dear Debate Coach,

Thanks for sharing a very important event for rising high school students at our area schools.

The Memphis Urban Debate League is holding a summer debate camp for students who think they might want to join the debate team next year. The camp will take place on July 18th the 22th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 at the Psychology Building Auditorium and Theatre and Communications Building at The University of Memphis.

There is no commitment.  If you do not enjoy the camp, then you do not have to join the team, but if you do, being on the debate team has a number of very important benefits. Specifically, students who compete in urban debate leagues like the Memphis UDL:

·         Grade point averages rise by 8-10% EACH YEAR of debating

·         Literacy scores improve 25% more than non-debaters after ONE year of participation

·         High School graduation rates are near 100%

·         College matriculation rates between 77-91%

·         UDL students receive millions in college scholarships every year.

Plus, Debate is a ton of fun. Here are some quotes from students who have competed in debate:

·         “Because of debate, I have friends from all over the place that I see frequently. It’s great.”

·         “It’s fun to crush other teams.”

·         “Debate gives you the opportunity to improve your speaking skills.”

·         “The skills you learn in debate help you in all your classes.”

·         “Debate is not only an opportunity for fun and education, but it prepares you for college and the world beyond.”

·         “Debate improved my self-confidence and self-esteem. It helped me learn that I am smart.”

·         “Being on the debate team helps your arguing skills- great for future use on parents.”

Similar camps in the nation cost up to one thousand dollars, but MCS students will be able to attend for free.

I am including in this letter a copy of the flyer for the debate camp. I strongly encourage our students to fill out the registration form and try it out.

Sincerely,
