Asallamu allaykum Everyone,

It is such a pleasure to be a member of such a dynamic and motivated group mashallah and attending a one-of-a-kind course. I hope and pray Allah blesses us with much to learn and practice, ameen.

I am from Montreal, Canada (yes... we`re forced to learn French too :) )

A bit about my Quran background: I feel in love with the recitation of the Quran at the RIS conference in Toronto 3 years back. Since than I have been listening and eager to learn maqamat. Unfortunately where I am, I couldn`t find a teacher, so I headed for UK because my father allowed me to go there, may Allah bless him. I learned under one qari there and he let me know I was a master at rast... but that I couldn`t do any other maqam :) So I pushed and listened, and pushed and listened... and didn`t feel much improvement except maybe a stronger voice. I later realized I learned much more than I was able to listen for. I also learned to love the recitations of Shaykh Mustafa Ismail, who I pray I will recite like one day.

After much trial I was finally allowed to go to study in Egypt where I studied with two recitation teacher, of whom my favorite was Ustaz Ahmed Kamil, may Allah grant him a long life. Going through my days in Egypt learning Arabic, hifth, and recitation, I felt a burst of life with my voice, maqamat, and my attachment to the Quran... but this chance stopped sooner than thought because I got married, which I am very happy for alhamdulillah :)

Now back in Montreal, I am sooo happy for this course I cannot explain my happiness. Brother Idrees has a talent mashallah and I hope we will learn what is planned for this course and never forget, ameen.

About other things I`m doing, I am going to be starting a Masters in Physics inshallah. I finished my Bacc. in Physics two years ago. I like to cook and excercise when I have time. :)

I ask you all for your prayers, you and this class will certianly be in mine :)

For all the sisters in the group it would be nice if we can make a little dialogue between us, to study or practice together :)

Sorry for the lengthy intro!

Wallaykumu salam brother Ahmed!

I`m glad to see that my message was a source of motivation :) ... but in all honesty I`m just a little student of knowledge, trying to learn as much as I can and keep it all in memory :) If Allah brought us all to the Quran than I am a strong believer in that the reason must be for our strong love, attachment, and hard work towards the Quran.

May Allah increase our barakah in this class and in our time, ameen!

wasallamu allaykum :)

JazzakAllahuKhair for sharing your background Sr. Khadija…from your entire maqamat journey…would you mind sharing some of your memorable moments?

wallaykumu salam Br. Shah,

Jazakallah khair for asking, although I`m not sure what to say! It`s like anytime when you`re fasniated by a topic.... every moment becomes memorable! I enjoy every chance and moment I`m allowed to learn Quran...

Some really nice things must have been the people I met along the way... I made some amazing friends. I like making friends from the Quran or Islamic classes I attend, because it is usually these people who share the same interests as me... so hold onto the friends you make in this class :)

Two of the most important things I learned was to learn to listen and never to underestimate. Learning to listen helped me in all aspects of my life subhnallah. Literally the word ``Quran`` means ``something to be recited``. Even before the Islam and the Noble Quran came down, Arabs learned most of what they knew through listening, unlike us (like brothe rIdrees mentionned) who learn most of things around us through sight. While learning to never underestimate mainly meant two things: never underestiamte someone or their recitation (because with arrogance Allah subhnah will not allow any form of knowledge to enter our hearts), and the second is to never underestimate any effort you make towards learning. Even if you just listen to Quran before going to sleep and you find it`s doing nothing for you, keep doing it. With time you`ll learn. Once Sh. Bukhari told me that it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 years to learn to recite..

Also, one thing about this class is that Br. Idrees doesn,t have the ``secretive`` ideas as Arab recitors do when it comes to passing down knowledge. He tells us techincal things and this definitely helps! With the other ustaz`s I had they wouldn`t tell me any techincal detail even if I asked the question a hundred and one different ways! Their method of learning is just listen and follow. I heard this is true of also traditional arab musicians.. they would only share the maqamat with a handful of students throughout their whole career. Listening and following is an essential method of course, but knowing the ideas behind the voice you`re trying to produce helps speed up the process considerably. So for all those definitions (tone, tune, rythme, volume, etc.) I suggest you think about them enough to internalize them (as I`m sure you`re already doing).. It will certainly help.

I`m sorry if I didn`t answer your question.. If you give me a specific question I might be more focused in my reply.

Jazakallah khair once again.

wasallamu allaykum,
Khadija

SubhanAllah…JazzakAllahuKhair Sr. Khadija …I really appreciate you taking the time to share some amazing gems…

“…with arrogance Allah subhnah will not allow any form of knowledge to enter our hearts…” Thank you so much for the reminder…

“…they would only share the maqamat with a handful of students throughout their whole career.” Which essentially increases the value of the knowledge…SubhanAllah…

Other than listening…did your teachers share any other wisdom?

Take care,

Shah

wallaykumu salam dear brother Shah,

Alhamdulillah you find them useful. I am not sure what else to say except that in your own journey towards learning you will find perhaps different things affect you more than others. Generally I can offer two other pieces of advice which you probably would know already..

First is to do anything and everything to keep your heart pure. Things like jelousy arrogance, etc will make anyone fail at one point and they will find they lost a lot with allowing these impurities in their hearts. Once an ustaz told me he had all of his students (in Egypt) coming to his house to audition because one brother from the UK was finding qaris for Ramadan in the UK masjids. The ustaz said that the brothers who were jelouse didn't recite well because he could hear the jelousy in their voice! So their jelousy in their hearts showed on their tongues and it turned against them.

The other thing is to always respect the directions of your Quran teacher. For example, if in hifth your teacher says to memorize 1 ayah the whole week and you think you can do much more, memorize it out of respect for the teacher and the teacher's position in knowledge and Allah will give you more with this respect. And vise versa, if the teacher gives you more than you think you can handle, do the best you can with the intention of respect and tawakul on Allah in your leanring and you'll find Allah subhnah will pen the doors for you in ways you didn't expect.

I hope you can share with me your tips on learning as well :) I'd be glad to ehar from someone else instead of me just blabing on :) Jazakallah khair.

Khadija

wallaykumu salam brother Abdullah,

Here is a link to maqam Bayati of Dr. Mahmood Ibrahim:

The second translation of the video going down in the comments is actually the first one you should read.

To find his other videos you can just type in his name and the maqam names (cika, rast, hogaz (in egyptian dialect this is hijaz), nahawand, etc.). I don't think I translated the other videos but if there's a demand for it I don't mind doing them :)

I also had Saba I think (from the comments) but I can't seem to find it so I'll do it again in the next couple of days inshallah.
