Assalaamu alaikum everyone,

Hope you're all doing well. Let's kick off this students' group with some intros ... say salaam and let us know who you are, where you are, etc.  Alhamdulillah we have students from all across the world, so let's connect!

Alhamdulillah we also have in this blessed group both students and teachers of Quran, so mention something about your background as well.

Salam Alaikum

My name is Hassan Hares. I live in Bradenton Florida, USA. I have been studying tajweed over a year or so Alhamdulillah … and always felt that I am not happy with my recitation.  When I tumbled  over www.reciteintune.com I felt my dua’a had been answered.  May Allah bless you Brother Idrees for .

I have been reading and googling  trying to understand this sound and voice stuff  such as Pitch, tune, Maqamat, tone, etc… Allah has guided me to prepare the below table.  I am not sure how accurate it is as it represents my understanding.  I thought of sharing it with all for comments and leaning from all and  Brother Idrees.  I included the table in text and graphic as I am not sure how it will appear in Google group.

Assalamu3laikum everyone!
May name is Yakub from north of Toronto Canada. Just a student of knowledge. Growing up, all my teachers were Qaris, but at a age I couldn't careless. Now Alhamdulillah I appreciate what they have taught me. I went to India to memorize the Quran but was unable to continue due to some problems and that ustadh (teacher) was also a Qari. I guess my favourite maqam are a mix but I really like bayati and rast. I've been wondering for the past year where I would be able take a 'Qari' like course around my busy work schedule. I am excited and happy to join this course. May Allah grant Br Idrees and his team success in both worlds. May Allah flourish the OverNight Qari course. Aameen!

as Salaamu 'alaykum waraHmatullaah

My name is Rabia and I am from Toronto/Mississauga, Canada.

I am taking this course to enhance my recitation and to eventually learn how to be at ease when reciting.
I am somewhat intimidated and became skeptic when I listened to the recitation in the 3 maqamaat we will be studying as I feel maqamaat is a men field and even if I try to reach a certain maqaam, my vocal folds won't allow it.
Currently, I am completely unaware what maqaam is suitable for me.

So I have taken this course as a daring step in my recitation and to challenge myself more.

I was against maqamaat until recently and the person to change my mindset was br. Idrees, baarakAllaahu feeh. Some concerns I have had with maqamaat was that the reciters compromise tajweed rules, and listeners of the Qur'aan only judge one's recitation by how beautiful it sounds and not the meaning it conveys. But knowing br. Idrees and his approach, I got encouraged to take this course.

I definitely need your du'aa to do well in this course :)

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

My name is Ali Ibrahim and I’m from West Jordan, Utah.

For the past few years I’ve been listening to the Qur’an, memorizing slowly overtime, and trying to imitate the greats like Sheikh Shuraim and Muhammad Al-Ayyoub as well as Sheikh Khaleel Husary.

I’m 22, I graduated last year with two bachelor degrees in Marketing and Information Systems and last year got married alhamdulillah and a few months ago got a really good job alhamdulillah.

Although my life has recently changed for the good I find that I’m too busy (an excuse, I don’t make the time basically) to the Qur’an as I used to. I still listen to it when I can like driving or working late at night at the office but I find myself not reciting as much as I used to.

Insha’Allah I hope with this course that I can gear up for Ramadan and get my mojo back and continue it even past Ramadan insha’Allah.

Really looking forward to this course as improving my voice is something I’ve struggled with since I started reciting when I started college 3 years ago.

Wasalam,

Ali Ibrahim

Asalamua'laykum!

I'm Ahmad Saleem. Orlando, FL. 20.
Excited to learn and curious on what maqamaat and all this is and testing how effective it'll be on my own voice.
Love that Br. Idrees stresses on reciting with the spirit and with your heart, I feel that 99% (including myself) of recitors
have intentions of showing off hidden in their pursuit to learning Quranic recitation.

If you guys have facebook, please add me at

I wish to keep in touch with the good brothers and sisters here.
May Allah give us sincerity, and give us barakah in Ramadan.

Wa'laykumusalam Rabia,

lol, i don't think maqamaat is only a male field, i just think that good female recitors aren't widely spread so
that their a'wrah of their voice is protected.

Insha Allah it'll be suitable for you.
I totally feel you on being against maqamaat vs. br. idrees's approach, I too was taught to stay away from it to the point of it being haram.
But now, I'm curious to know what this taboo science is and if there's any real harm in it.

Your dua's needed too.  :)

Asalaamu alaikum everyone.

My name is Fozia Umm Sara and I live in a town called High Wycombe just outside London.

I am a mother of 3 young children and enrolling onto this course was a very last minute decision as I was unsure if I could make the time to do homework/practice etc. If any of you have kids, you'll know that most mums stop making sense after 6pm on weekdays due to exhaustion :-) Alhamdulillah my husband is supporting me by undertaking many of my evening chores so that I can study.

Anyhow, my background is English teaching and project management. I have a degree in Arabic from SOAS, (University of London therefore I am not proficient in speaking Arabic but written is ok, plus that was a long time ago, in the last century- literally!) Before getting married I travelled to Syria and learn tajweed alhamdulillah. However, practise makes perfect and I have lacked that in recent years due to the demands of motherhood. However, I teach tajweed to revert sisters in the area but it is quite a basic level at the moment.

I want to learn only one maqamat and master it, so that I can enjoy my own recitation of the Quran and hopefully inspire my children to love it too. I would have loved to learn Ajam maqamat, but as its not taught on this course, I will have to choose another. Alhamdulillah, Allah has granted me this window of opportunity and I pray that ALL of us benefit from it and excel in it for His face only, ameen.

I think we have quite a few teachers and advanced learners of Qur'an on this course, so feeling a bit nervous. I only heard of maqamats last month!!!!

Jazakalah khairan wasalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.

Asalaamu'alaikum everyone,

My name is Hasan Choudhury. I am from London UK.

I am probably the oldest (Nearly 39!) and the most amateur one here as it seems that all the posters so far are fairly advanced in their levels of Qur'an.

Regardless, I am looking forward to improving my recitation and to benefit from Ramadhaan as much as I can as it is the month of the Qur'an and I pray that Allah makes it easy for us all to benefit from this course to the fullest and that we do it only seeking to please Allah by it.

I have been learning tajweed for a short while and am familiar with the majority of the rules of tajweed but my recitation is very monotone and am really looking forward to picking up practical examples of how I can apply the various maqamaat that we will be learning insha Allah.

Assalamu alaykum everyone

I am Yusuf Haffejee from Leicester, UK. I am by profession a dentist and a Hijama Therapist. I do consider these as my secondary professions as I believe that Al Qur'an is a superior science. I am studying tajweed and ashara qiraat with Shaykh Uthman Khan and Shaykh Sayed Hassan Bukhari. I have realised through this how in depth the knowledge of Qur'an is. What we are learning is only a fraction of the knowledge of this Great and Magnificent Word of Allah. We are all truly blessed to acquire the skill of reciting Qur'an. May Allah Bless us all and beautify our voices in a manner that He is pleased with.

Assalamu Alaikkum all

All Praise be to Allah(swt). I received the email on overnight_qari course from jazriyyah one day before the class start day and it looked one of unique kind !! I haven't seen offered online and opening doors of opportunity. I was struggling to find a way to improve recitation. Jazakhallah for the brother(s) organizing it (and also making it available to sisters) and may Allah(swt) put barakah in his family and noble work. I am just a beginner and doing online Taleemul Quran course with Alhudainstitute.ca and took some online courses with Sheik Uthman Khan. Still I am trying to comprehend some terms. Today I was googling on maqamat. I like listening to Sheik Abdul Basit recitation which is very soothing to heart. I can't believe I am in this course and insha Allah hope to benefit from it along with others. I live in Toronto, Canada and blessed to be in IT field.

Al salaamu alaikum

My name is Mohazzi (Muadh) Larry from Perth, Australia. Al hamduliLlaah, I have studied some tajweed with Seekers Guidance. I have always wanted to learn the art of beautiful recitation. I am a little tone deaf and my reading reflects it. I hope to start to enjoy my own recitation so I can feel the Quran with my ear. May Allah make bring our efforts to fruition. Ameen

Asalaamu alaikum.

I pray everyone is well.

Could I request all my brothers and sisters to make dua for me. I was suddenly taken ill last night, and am on
Very strong medication. Alhamdulillah i am back home now. I haven't been through all of lesson 2 but will try to cover it later and inshallah try and join tonight's live evening session. I am devastated that I can't give100% at the moment.

I just pray and hope that Allah blesses me with the ability to participate and benefit from this course, ameen.

Wasalaamu alaikum

@ Sr. Fozia…take plenty of rest…trust me…I’m an engineer…may Allah (swt) give you a prompt recovery…

Btw: why is Br. Idrees’ glass always half full?

For sr. Rabia from canada, and the other sisters--

here is a video of a sister, Sharifah Khazif, who won a Quran competition in Malaysia - amazing reciter masha'Allah! I was encouraged after watching this, to see that sisters can & do thrive in this field of Islamic knowledge!

@ Br. Shah, it is against the etiquettes of recitation to recite in the shower. These are the words of Allah which are written in the 'Loh e Mahfooz'. Please give it the utmost respect and recite as if praying salah.

Thank you Sr. Shazia...if you don't mind, could you share your evidence?

Note: the Sharia' differentiates between place of 'wudu, place of shower and place of relieving...

Br. Shah, I am not presenting any sharaee hukum, however I did read that the sahaba used to take the utmost care so as not to utter any word of even dhikr while in a toilet or any place like that.
I am certainly in no position to criticize, and truly sorry if I sounded rude.

Salam Alaikum!

Apologies for such a late introduction but my fiancee has been in the hospital the past couple of days and just got back yesterday night so I haven't been able to keep up with things.

My name is Sajeda Canani and I am currently residing in Birmingham, UK. I am doing my final placement year as an Optometrist so need all your prayers as I will be sitting for some exams soon.

I have been teaching basic Tajweed for a year or two. I didn't know much about Maqamaat until quite recently and am therefore very excited to learn it! InshaAllah we will all be able to help each other!

With duas,
Sajeda Canani
