Assalaamu'alaykum  wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

I pray that you are all well.

I think, from the grammatical perspective, the same caution of Qari Idrees must be applied at other times when we embellish other texts.  We must be careful not to change the tajweed/tashkeel of words to suit stylistic sound.

For example, in the adhaan, the superlative "abkar" is used.  The proper pronunciation of the stand alone word is "akbaru".  Therefore, when reciting the adhaan and connecting the two first statements, it should be read Allaahu akbaru Allaahu akbar.  The diacritical mark that sits on the raa of akbar is a dhamma and not a fatha.

On a side note, I once heard a course that dealt with the meanings of various statements in salaah.  The discussion on Allaahu Akbar was amazing and part of the discussion concerned translating it as "Allaah is more Tremendous..."

It is sad but alhamdulillah brother Idrees will be keeping in touch insha Allah. I am looking forward to future sessions but in the mean time I want to perfect what has been taught already.

My biggest problem at the moment is that I can usually follow after listening and repeating but when I try to continue,I lose the flow and become monotone again. Really looking forward to more recitation's to be uploaded so that I can try different verses.

Can anyone give any tips on how to maintain the maqaam?

im definitely no expert to give you advice but would say just keep listening to the maqam and repeat the pattern over and over, what i did with hijaz was try to apply it to all kinds of ayas to make sure i got it and understood it.

This is what worked for me in the past:

1. Slowly decrease the volume while reciting at the same volume yourself until you go monotone and then increase the volume a bit. Work your way down to mute.
2. I use my right ear with headphones and left ear to hear self. With this i "cup" my right hand a little close to my mouth so my voice bounces back and i can hear my self. You can also further hear yourself with by placing your left hand on your left ear like you are giving azan. Now you formed an L shape which captures your sound from your mouth and directs it your left ear while optionally you have an earphone in your right ear.
3. Another technique is to find a way to loop the practise lessons where Br. Idrees is reciting so you don't have to click the video every time.

Hope that helps, its technical, but it works for me.

I think the only thing the upload depends on is the attachment size limit while you're sending email .. on gmail it's a maximum of 25 MB.
