Hi all

A mate of mine just bought the above vehicle at a steal but is trying unsuccessfully to diagnose and fix a problem.

It has this stutter when driving very slowly and pulling away and seems to get worse when it’s hot. Torque converter and gearbox have been redone but the problem persists. Any idea what it could be?
Also any mechanics that you would recommend? I’ve suggested new mechanics.

Thank you

Drain the transmission oil and fill up with the oil recommended in the owner's manual.

From recent post on the LCCSA:

What oil has been filled into the gearbox? If it is not TOYOTA ATF specific oil then you tend to get shift shock.

Please check your owners manual and make 100% sure it has the correct spec oil in from Toyota only!.

It seems these boxes only like to run on Toyota Type T-iv ATF and nothing else. The first gearbox place I took it to replaced the ATF with "equivalent spec" Dextron. I immediately told them to drain it and replace with Toyota Type T-iv ATF which they did and I made sure that Toyota refilled with Type T-iv ATF after replacing the solenoids as well. So I'm fairly confident that we're good on the ATF!

One thing to remember regarding the oil, you are never able to change the full volume in the gearbox. It might help to change the oil again.
It takes a while to get the not standard oil diluted to such an extend that it does not have an impact any more.

The A750F requires the Toyota WS (World Standard) gearbox oil. Nothing else works.

Hope this helps.
Regards

'Land Cruiser ‘93 4.2 td' '

'93 Land Cruiser 80 with 1HD-T engine or 1HZ with aftermarket turbo?

Thanks for the replies. No turbo, gearbox and torque converter refurbished as well as fuel pump and injectors calibrated.

Thanks again for replies

Hi Bruce,

He can try Andy at Euro Swiss in Honeydew: 0846951284.

Considering the year model that vehicle (engine) must have very high kilos... Perhaps time to do the full due-diligence and check compression and diesel pump wear amongst other... I agree with other sentiments that it sound fuel supply related.

Bruce, Ralph at Toyo is very good but in this instance I will recommend Corrie Coetzer at Lynco Diesel in downtown Jhb.

He’s phenomenal with injection technology.

Another option is Wessels Motors in Kempton Park.  They know cruisers very well.

Btw, out of experience I do not agree that Toyota ATF is the only option.  Another topic for another day though.

Thanks all. I have passed on all the names. I know he mentioned he was going to do a complete rebuild in about end of Nov or Dec but not sure what has happened since.

Will call him later and get an update for you all.

My Landy is still fine though if anyone is interested? (Just kidding and probably tempting fate 😂)
