Greetings all.

This July.

We will use the Ruacana D3700 route To Epupa.  Any campsites you have stayed at and can recommend?

5 good 4x4's.

Then we have 5 nights Epupa To Windhoek.  Trying Not to go back via Opuwo.

Had a look at latest T4A maps, but still scratching my head.

By-passing Van Zyls pass and Marienfluss,  is there a sensible 5 or 6 night itinerary using the D3703 and D3707 (or other) routes Okangwati - Otjitanda - Orupembe - Puros - Sesfontein - then either via Palmwag or Kamanjab to Windhoek.

Your thoughts and advice very much needed and very welcome.

Mike, I see no replies up to now from the usual contributors?  I never used the D3703, but it should be ok to Orupembe. From then on the D3707 is well travelled, including corrugations. I would suggest to continue to Palmwag after Sesfontein, and then use the C40 to Kamanjab, if not much time is left. Otherwise you could go via Khowarib Schlucht and the Kamdescha Vet Gate to Kamanjab.

One addition: On the C40 the Hoada Campsite is nice.

Mike, some more thoughts: The issue in the Kaokoveld is filling stations. The only reliable are Opuwo, Ruacana, Palmwag and Kamanjab. You might get from jerry cans in Purros. Sesfontein lodge has a pump. But both are not reliable. I am not aware of the situation in Epupa, Okangwati and Orupembe, but there might be nothing. From Ruacana to Palmwag is around 750 km, via Khowarib Trail to Kamanjab around 800 km. Without possible detours, if you want to drive parts of e.g. the Hoanib. All is heavy going. But with long range tanks and 2 spare jerry cans it should nevertheless be ok.
The Kaokoveld had the first good rains in many, many years. Palmwag the first rain after 6 years. You will be lucky to see a transformed landscape. But many roads and tracks are badly damaged, including the D3700. Hopefully until July the D-roads are redone. But other tracks might still be bad.

Morning Manfred.

All good advice.  We will be carrying enough fuel per vehicle for at least 1000km and this is assuming lot's of slow going.  Road conditions and route choices will also be closely monitored between now and July.  Really looking forward to seeing the green desert, whatever else we may have to manage.

Mike, I checked a bit my Kaokoveld records. If you want to make a nice detour of about 70 km through the Hoanib, you can leave the D3707 at the Giribes Plain to Signal Hill and down the Obias River to the Hoanib, and join the Road again at Sesfontein. Spectacular and much more interesting than the gravel roads through the plains.

Hi Manfred.

Yes, that looks like an interesting option.  Have you driven the Ganamub riverbed?   If yes, which route, Giribes or Ganamub, would you choose?

Our current idea from Puros is to drive SW along the Hoarusib for a few km and then to take the first track South to Amspoort and Hoanib valley.  Then to Sesfontein, but deviating via the Ganamub to the D3707.  Any comments on these routes will be very welcome.

If you anyhow want to go via the Amspoort track, my suggestion is obsolete. I remember, that it is sometimes difficult, to get out of the Hoarusib if it has strongly flowed due to sandwalls. The same at Amspoort to go into the Hoanib. But I assume in July some tracks are already laid new. People in Purros should know. The Obias is only spectacular if you go down, and not up. But you could clearly make the deviation via the Ganamub from Die Poort. And it helps to avoid the Hoanib bulldust closer to Sesfontein.
