Friends got mugged next to lake Sibaya in the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve last week when they drove from Sodwana for a picnic outing to 9 Mile & Mabibi. A large panga wielding gang relieved them of all valuables and phones but fortunately left the Pajero alone... :(

Be careful in that area...

Very sad, we travelled that Kosi > Sodwana with no problems and did not see a lot of locals, stopped at Sibaya with pratically no other people around :-(

There has always been a rotten element there, as in many other spots, like in and around Kosi.

We've been through there, and will go through there again.  You are more likely to be hijacked and killed in Jbg than being robbed there.  But unfortunately this area forms part of Africa where these things happen.  You are never safe, wherever you are.  I'm glad that they managed to drive out unharmed.

Cheers
Mike

A few years ago at St. Lucia whilst in a laundromat,  a European policeman advised us that there were problems and that the syndicate was caught along that specific strip.  This troubled issue abaited for a few years; but what Mike mentioned is unfortunately true....its no wonder why they say Africa is not for sissies.

This sounds like a local mob attack - in the past most robberies were conducted by smaller gun-toting groups, allegedly from Moz. Should be fairly easy to catch the culprits, if the will is there.

HI, were at the Sodwana over xmas holidays going to lake daily with seeing no holidaymakers at all, 9 mile had 2 army tent erected by the picknik aree, seen no one but lots of rubble and lots of evidence of boozing, turned around and left. Discussed issue with gate guard  but only been warned to stay away. Also traveled all the way to Kosi but hardly seen any people except for armed parksboard guys, an incident free trip, few holiday makers by Kosi mouth fishing and snorkling, that was it, always an enjoyable trip!

cheers

From what I gather Kosi Bay is still well controlled from a security stand point.  I'd probably not venture further north until measures are in place to secure their own local community.  Some communities like Mbibi know well that tourism keep them going,  but how much clout do they have in providing reasonable protection for patrons?
