Iveco Daily 4x4

Anyone with experience of the Iveco Daily 4x4?  Forward control in single and double cab format.  On paper an attractive spec, perhaps overkill for overlanding applications.  125 kw 3 liter turbo diesel, 350 Nm torque over a wide speed range, 24 speed transfer case arrangement: 6 speed main box with a combination of transfer case ratios to give 24 ratios.  To handle the torque of the crawler gears, the diffs and sideshafts must be seriously strong. Full time 4wd with 3 diff locks, solid axles and what looks like a very flexible long blade leaf spring suspension all round.  Short and long wheel base chassis versions.  Priced at 600k - 700k.  There is a motorhome conversion available on this chassis at about R1m

I see lots of problems on the forestry tracks where vertical clearance is an issue.

But, still a great specification and it should be very capable.

 

I wonder what the fuel consumption is like.  Maybe too scared to ask J

Saw one that was pretty shot up last month in Syria! Still being used as a field ambulance by the FSA in the war zone and seem to be an amazing vehicle! Would make a lekker overlander in my opinion! .........don't know if you can see the bullet holes in the attached pics

They are very good.

Clients has one as a double cab camper and has just spent 9 months in Russia with it. MPG wise they are not too bad it is claimed. Height is a bit of an issue but way under a truck - containers are not an option but Ro-Ro sure is.

I know a few people that have them for overlanding vehicles. Not so much for Africa, more for South America and Mongolia/Russia etc. Good ground clearance and 4x4 gear for a van, more comfortable and home like than a 4x4.

Iveco does not like "African" diesel!  Engines only last 100k !

We are just buying one, having it fitted out in europe for overlanding, then heading down to africa in early 2014. We reckon fuel consumption will be average 13.3 ltrs per 100 km (21mpg) but we'll let you know when we have clocked up a few miles in it!! much more info on www.ivecoforums.com if anyone is interested.

African fuel is getting better though!? At least there were many shiny new Total stations most of the way down the west coast for example. I only had problems with fuel in Sudan and Saudi (was like water that a honey badger had peed in).

Seemed to be a lot less fuel problems with overlanders than I was expecting after reading many previous overlanders sites. Some countries even had 'Euro Diesel' available for a high price.

No personal experience with the Iveco, but based on the adventures these guys take on, I'd say they should make a fairly competent base for an expedition 4x4.

I've also been following Iveco's announcement that they'll be bringing in the 4x4 version - very similar concept to the MB Sprinters, which I've liked for a long time.  Last week I saw three brand new Iveco 4x4 chassis cabs on the N3 being driven towards Gauteng.  Very nice looking vehicles!

 

PS - for those who recognise the long nosed trucks in the video clips - Iveco bought over Magirus Deutz and these are basically a newer version of the old Samil 100 (our military Samil range was basically rebranded Magirus Deutz trucks).

They don't seem very good at staying upright which is usually a sign of a good vehicle.

Maybe in Italian driving that style is more fashionable?

Well, if the Defender's life comes to an end, we can always buy the
Iveco look alike.

I did not know that they took over Magirus Deutz - the new long nose
looks like a face lift of the old trucks, and nice seeing that they live
on. Awesome trucks! We still have a couple of hundred running around
here in our sugar cane area transporting cane, with a good few receiving
total make-overs every year.
