Wouldn't be my first choice, or second either, for that matter. Too many heavy on battery draw for starters.

Thats a Minus 40. Used to be very good but very heavy power comsumption. This ia however a newer model. More used by bush lodges etc than the 4x4 community these days.

Having tried every fridge on the market (with the exception of Indel B and some of the other lesser known ones) I have come to the conclusion through loads of trial and error that your best compromise in a 12V Fridge/Freezer for offroad use is an Engel...

Have to agree. I have only had Engel, and see no need to experiment further. Have also had good service from the agents.

Mates with NL are also happy with them.

Cheers

Only had Engel - and the Xplorer came with -40 - but that one works great... will not use it for in-vehicle travel though, to big.

Just got my first indel b after 12 years of engel / national luna.  Works very well, super quiet, least current draw of all 3 and half the price. We'll see how long it lasts.

I had 39L Waeco and I had no problems with mine. The reason I sold it was because I bought it blind (i.o.w didn't inspect it first). When I got it I was very disappointed with the impractical layout of the bin in the unit (read - very small). Add to that my scepticism about its insulating properties and scepticism about the durability of all the plastic bits like the latch etc. So I sold it in favour of an Engel which has a bigger bin. My NL broke twice on trips so I lost all faith in it... :( (And I could NEVER get the smell of death out of the thing despite trying every single boere-raat)...

First fridge was a Minus 40, still working today after. Many many years of use, high current draw but extremely well insulated.

Then complemented it with a Engel 13 liter for in car use, bad insulation and noisy, but working well when driving to keep cold drinks and beer cold.

Then bought an Indel, probably the best if then all, super quite, low amp draw, and it came at almost half the price of the more expensive steel jobbies.

9 years ago, I rented a Minus 40 for 3 weeks for a very hot trip to Botswana and North Kruger Park. It was around 45C ambient for most of the trip and the fridge performed very well and didn’t seem to to use more out of the battery than the NL and Engel I have used since then.

Only thing I’ve heard, is they had a reputation for failing thermostats, but I didn’t have that one long enough to experience that problem.

Hi All

I may me off topic not sure.

The Minus 40 that I have (40L) is quite heavy on the power consumption. the other problem that I have is that the "computer" have been acting up from the early stages and have now gone completely berserk.

I phone the distributors of the minus40 for a repair agent. I was informed that they don't really do the small ones so much anymore.

After a little deliberation they said that the only guys that they can refer me to for repairs is Kempton Air or refrigeration for repairs. I cant remember so well.

I haven't been there yet because it's a bit out of my way.

I'm a little perturbed that we can't get a  few names that will do repairs. I have now essentially a box that can hold stuff cold for a while!

I do have a 20L Engel that works very well and of course a warm Engel in the passenger seat.

Seeing that all the cooling bits in a Minus 40 come from Fanfoss, have you tried following up with them ?

The other thing is - provided you can obtain the spares locally - any fridge tech should be able to diagnose and repair...

In Pretoria West there is a refrigeration component supplier that sells Danfoss service units. I will  have to look them up once home next week, but if it's only the electronic controller it's plug and play, a DIY jobbie.

If you are in Pretoria, you are most welcome to contact me. I have repaired many Minus40, Engel, Indel B, Rhino, Waeco and Campmaster fridge/freezer's.

As somebody who has done lots of repairs on these, please give us an opinion on the better unit.

Only insofar as the type of repairs you have done and ease/cost to get back operational.

Currently looking for a 30 – 40 litre unit for the platkar

Eric

That is a question that is not that easy to answer, but for a platkar my choice will be any of the plastic molded models as they are more environment friendly in your platkar. Check the price and thickness of the sidewalls. The thicker the better. Most (read 90%) of them use the Danfoss compressor today.

Today there is basically 3 types of compressor systems that is been used in the market nl:
Danfoss BD35/50F with different controllers (12/24Vdc only, 110/240Vac & 12/24Vdc only and 12/24Vdc & Solar only)
Engel Swing compressor with Engel AC/DC power supply
Chinese Danfoss copy (mostly used in the Kellerman and Snowmaster models)

So Eric, make your choice. The most important thing you have to remember is the airflow around the unit when you pack your platkar.

Best regards

Johann

Hi

I have had a Minus 40 Logicold 80L for 10 years, with no problems, until lighting struck the house and it was one of the many appliances that got fried.

Yes, their starting power consumption is high, but once it is running it did not use more current than a NL or Engel, of which I have both. The problem with the high starting power is that once the battery is low, under 12.20V, it fails to start. Yes, it is noisy.

The big problem is that they are no longer manufactured and I was told that there are no spare parts, and mine could not be repaired. I tried Kempton Air, but he could not help me, unfortunately I did not know about Johann Prinsloo. The insurers then decided to scrap the fridge.

Therefore, Arjan, I would politely decline the offer.

Regards
Juan

My Minus 40 packed up a while ago. The agents referred me to a dodgy place in Jet Park. They took one look at it and declared it dead and unfixable so I unbolted and threw away the motor section, and now make use of my nice Minus 40 cooler box... strong enough to sit on.

I can recommend Johann's work. Over and above his knowledge of domestic and travel appliances you are encouraged to tap into his vast knowledge of all things dual-battery and charging. And yes - he can repair chargers too... :) :) Twice ! :)
