Going to Nam in March. Planning to use the Rietfontein border. Any Accommodation options nearby?
What is the state of the R33 from Kuruman North West to Rietfontein? Is North via upington a better option?

R33 or R31?

The gravel stretch of the R31 between Van Zylsrus and Askham depend on the amount of traffic with tires inflated for tar road and when last the grader graded the road. 

Accommodation options I can recommend Molopo Lodge.   At Aroab where you should get your Namibian road permit you can stay at Hunters Inn Guest House or Bronco Inn behind Bronco Supermarket.  Very basic.  But then my experience is dated (2007).

Remember that Rietfontein border post hours are something like 08h00 - 16h30.

Yes that is what it was in 2007.

May I recommend that you phone them and ask them about the road tax since I am not sure about hours etc.

IIRC you are adventurous by nature, so why would you need a reason to avoid a route?  :-)  If the route have too much 'sinkplaat' stop have a beer and deflate your vehicles tires or drive slower to enjoy more beer and the view...  :-)

Going with the soft vehicle(FJ Cruiser) so sinkplaat is hardly noticed :-)
