Can anybody recommend a safe campsite close to Cape Town.
It don't need to be at a beach for swimming but rather easy access to and from Cape Town city.

We always enjoy Glen Oakes just south of Caledon at the top of the Hemel en Arde valley. You take the whole campsite. It's on a working farm.
Check the website
Nice farm eggs and cured meats to buy. Very child friendly. Farm dam available for swimming. Nice walking and MTB trails and some 4x4 trails that need to be booked with the farmer.

Thanks Jeremy but according to T4A Glen Oakes is 135km and 1 hour 51 minutes from Cape Town?
Not close to Cape Town in my frame of reference.

Hi Hannes,

Give African Overlanders a shout. When they were in Gordon’s Bay I was really impressed by the show Duncan was running and especially their customer care and attention to detail. Nowadays they’re located on a farm near Kraaifontein. Even if you prefer not to use them for camping, they should be able to refer you.

Kind regards,

Francois

Maybe Kommetjie or "Ou Skip"?

Hannes,

I have stayed at Ou Skip once over a Dec. The campsite (stand) was so small I couldn't even change my mind in it. The neighbours had demarcated the site with shade-cloth partitions and literately camped right on the boundary. I could pick meet off their braai from out of my rooftop tent. I just came out of the Cederberg so the place was a shock to my system. It won't see me again. It's like a shanty town. People even take their washing machines and tumble dryers. Nee - alle magtag.

Miller's Point.  Municipal but very small (15 sites) just past Simons Town.
Very scenic. 45 - 60 min to Cape Town (prolly the same from Melkbos)
BUT WATCH OUT FOR BABOONS.  They raid almost daily - I've seen wrecked tents, etc.
Regards
Mike

We once camped at Zandvlei in Muizenberg. http://www.capetown.gov.za/en/SportRecreation/Pages/Zandvleiresort.aspx

That was quite some years ago so I don’t know what it’s like now but it’s an easy drive into the city.

Frank.

I drove past a site between Stellenbosch and Somerset West the other day. Does anyone have further information on it?

Hi Martin,

Is that the one on the left side as you leave Stellenbosch, past Blauklippen and then the cemetary?

If that one, it is the Mountain Breeze Caravan park.

Stayed there in 2010, and had a very good time.

I had the same desire and ended up in Kommetjie - nothing else seemed closer/better.

Kommetjie kampsite is vey nice, just remember Winter is starting and Kommetjie is on the Atlantic seaboard, so can be cold, wet and windy. Trees do provide pritection though, nice sites. Traffic into CT can be hectic, depending on where you have to be.

Thanks gents but I have already booked at Ou Skip for January 2014.
I would rather be the same distance from Cape Town to Pretoria further north of Pretoria than in Cape Town in the winter.  :-)

Drove past it yesterday.  Looks quaint and neat. If it interests you I could stop in and take a photo or two.
